This technique is actually pretty old. Been used lots of times.
To the "rat with an ear on it's back" comment earlier, that was an artificially created biodegradable scaffold that was implanted in rats to test it's reactivity with living systems. They didn't actually grow an ear on the rat, it's more similar to those "horn" implants people sometimes get as body-modification only ear-shaped instead of horn-shaped.
