It's been 6 years since this video came out. Why are speed limits still a thing?

Here's a group of students driving the speed limit on I-285 and backing up traffic for miles.

While I don't agree with the method, can we please do away with the fucking stupid low speed limits?

The limit should be set at +/- the observed speed limit of 80% of the cars on a given highway. That number sits around 70-80 mph or 120 kph.

The speed limit already is 70mph.

    Not on most highways...

    65 here.

The method that I would like to see happen probably never will because people would be paranoid of government tracking.

so, it's a bunch of assholes being pricks to see if we can increase our current speed laws?

ok, that's really going to change the laws.

won't ever happen here in america because we have one too many retarded/rude/terrible drivers.

    get over it.

The title is a dopey bit of rhetoric. Changing highway limits is entirely reasonable, changing surface street limits is not.

First of all, the title is pretty confusing. I don't understand the problem, is it that the lowest allowed speed is too low? Not everyone wants to drive as fast as they can.

It's the highest allowed speed. You know, speed limit.

Agreed. Although even on highways, speed limits of 80 during night weekend hours are one thing...and an entirely different thing during rush hour.

If anything speed limits need to not be static.

So basically a bunch of college students all got on the highway and drove 55 MpH (What highways are they driving on? Most highways are 65-70 MpH)
and than proceeded to all drive side-by-side down the highway (Which is illegal to begin with) to prove?... What? That they can back up traffic when following 1 law and ignoring another?

    It's not illegal.

Right lanes are for slower traffic. Left lanes are not for faster traffic. If you speed you lose the right of way.

Then I see even less reason to change them. They're there for a reason, to ensure traffic security. If the limit so low it doesn't make sense, sure but I doubt that's the case on most of the highways.
e* Those guys were just being douches by blocking all the lanes. There's no problem when people follow the rules and drive on the right side of the road if they're slower.

Speed limits here on the Interstates outside of major cities is 70 for light vehicles and 60 for trucks. Seems about right.

On a highway you are supposed to stay to the right lane unless passing. Driving side by side for a long period of time IS punishable, I'd know as I've gotten tickets for them both.

Lol if I went the speed limit each time I drive to Toronto I wouldn't be able to get there without stopping in under 9 hours

Depends on the location, it is actually illegal to use the left lane except to pass or to obstruct the flow of traffic in some states.

Or just pitch the entire concept of fixed speed limits for large areas in the trash, use localized limits where appropriate (e.g. intersections, etc.) and set dynamic speed limits as conditions dictate.

I couldn't hear what was said over the shitty music being played.

This exactly, "Obstructing the flow of traffic" was the violation stated on the ticket in my case.

Higher speed limits have been shown to lead to increased fatalities. I really can't see a good reason to increase the speed limit just because you're in a rush to get somewhere.
