    When do I become 'English'?

    Hello,

So I'm Scottish and have lived in Scotland my whole life. However, I'm moving to England at the end of the month. Perhaps a stupid question, I've just never had to think about it, but when do I become English, if I ever officially do? When I arrive there, when I've lived there longer than I've lived in Scotland? Never, because I was born in Scotland?

    Thoughts?

Edit: Some people bizarrely think that asking this question means I want to be English. I don't.

    When Jack Wilshere says so.

    In other words...never.

    Never.

You'll always be Scotish because that is your "race", it's what you were born and you aren't changing your nationality because you'll still be "British"

    No.

To be English, you must be one of the following:

    1. Born in England.

    2. Born abroad to English parents.

    3. Born abroad but come to England at a young age, and go through the English education system.

    Anything else is British.

Never and there isn't anything you can do about it. We are just hardwired this way. At what point would you think of a Londoner as being Scottish?

This goes for all immigration. I am technically an immigrant myself and even though I look the same as most people in my new country, like you will, I will never be one of them. The odd part is that even if you are not allowed to be the same, most people have no problem with you being better. It rarely has anything to do with intolerance, just old pack mentality that kept us alive tens of thousands of years ago.

You need crooked teeth, reddish hair and pasty skin.

I'd say you're English when you wish to identify yourself as 'English' rather than 'Scottish.'
I couldn't for the world imagine why you'd want to be English rather than Scottish, but that's just me. Not to bash England, honestly... I just think that Scotland and Scottish history have a lot of things to offer, both good and bad, and even though I consider everyone to be 'Earthish' first and foremost, I do believe it's good to be proud of your roots, and proud of everyone else's cultural roots as well.

Well that's good, at the risk of causing a stupid argument, I don't want to be considered English anyway. I don't even want to change my location beneath my avatar when I move to England. ;P

Also, when you speak you need to sound as if you yell and gasp at the same time.

You;ve clearly never been within 1000 miles of my part of England. We all look like this now - and by "we" I mean the uneducated youth.

You're born in your country and your nationality is Scottish. Why would you want to be English anyway the world loves Scottish people.
