There's a big difference between dumb myths and an actual asteroid in space that's headed towards us. Sure, the chances of it hitting us is slim but it's still there, and no, we currently don't actually have a way of deflecting any meteorites or asteroids that could collide with the planet, which will become a problem eventually.
