Well I imagine that we'll end up with pregnancy requiring permits and such, eventually. We'll have to bring population growth under control sooner or later or simply run out of food.

It's already well under control in pretty much the entire western world. The USA's total fertility rate (number of children born per woman) is about 2.06, which is slightly below replacement (about 2.1 in developed nations). The EU is even lower at about 1.59, and Canada is about the same as them. If you banned immigration and shut the borders tomorrow, your population would almost instantly start dropping.

Basically all the world's population growth is coming out of Africa, along with a little from Asia/Middle East.
