Why are people offended by racism?

If it wasn't true, why would you be offended? This insecurity seems to point to a grain of truth, which is why I think people get so upset about it.

I think it depends on the um... degree of racism. Like throwing a picnic for your black friend and bringing BBQ and watermelon, could be kinda funny (again depending on said black friend's sense of humor.

Going to said friend's house and hanging a replica of him to a tree might be pushing it a little.

Racism can either be funny or offensive, it depends how you view it.

Depends on the racism, I believe. Some is more socially acceptable (at least around here), such as hating on various religious groups for their "ridiculous practices and beliefs" . I'll be honest; I'm a little bit racist. It's based on real life experiences and because of them I find it extremely difficult not to drag all people of those groups over the edge. In my case it is predominantly about the Romanis. I realize it's wrong and I think it's because I realize it and because I am honest about it that people aren't offended when I say it.

Not all racism is something that is "true" or "false". If someone calls my girlfriend a "fucking gook", that's not something that's true or false, it's just an expression of abject hatred.

I am less offended by racism than I am by the unadulterated stupidity that accompanies it. The idea that in this day and age that such primitive cognition even exists is offensive.

Well my best friend at work is black, I also happen to outrank him by a long shot, so he pretends to people that I treat him like a slave and abuse him often violently. The next day the roles are reversed and it will be a black man being homophobic and encouraging homophobic violence towards me, outsiders have complained about both of us for being so bigoted, we both laugh and go get more beer.
