A lot of modern software companies have workspaces either similar to, or more open than that. Team collaboration gets the job done better than everyone off in their own cubicles.

Yup - Valve's workspace is a big area about 50' by 100' with desks lining the outside and 1-2 sections of 4 desks on the interior and the a big worktable and open area for impromptu meetings. makes it really easy to meet and collaborate with everyone

Looks cool, though for me I would hate the random crap on the desk...
