Mage gear not very "magey" ?

Well, something that I've always wondered is why most of the mage tiers doesn't look very "magelike" at all.

Examples of that is tier 16, 10.. It's always some weird stuff like goggles, cogwheels, bad colors.

A good example of what i consider proper mage gear is sets like frostfire and tempest. It really matches the class, but for some reason blizz have been walking further away from that concept with each new tier.

That doesn't seem to happen with other classes.

Warriors always get something very bulky, stone/metal, gladiator style gear.
Warlocks always get necromantic, dark wizardy style gear.
Druids get animal, nature, soothing-looking style gear.

But mages, the gear just doesn't have a mage identity to it.

You would think it's the easiest thing ever to make some gear with something like icicles falling from your shoulder like the shaman frostwitch set, or maybe some arcane runes that blink through your gear every couple seconds, like the warlock tier 6 wing effect.

Oh well, until then, thank god for transmog!

Agree with OP. AT least we have xmog

T3 (with the helm disabled, I really hate that helm), t5 and t11 are the only good mage sets so far.

I agree. I can't say much more than that. Give more robe-like gear, pointy wizard hats, etc. Use the elements some more (Frost, Fire, Arcane).

PvP sets in Wotlk were good tho.

season 8 tier 10 were both great imo, personally I use the challenge mode gear so idc

Challenge Mode mage gear is pretty much the best mage gear in this game, by a long shot.

CM and T3 (without that ugly helmet) are the best ones imo

Hell yes. They're really going to have to out do themselves for WoD CM gear for me to think of replacing this set.

I have an odd soft spot for T2, but the hat is too goofy, and the robe too pink.

T13 and T16 are most definitely "magey" just not in the way some people would like. Arcane magic is "time and space" magic, which is why we get these sets with the goggles, the cogwheels etc. They are going for the steampunk time traveler aesthetic and while I wasn't really into it at first I really like the idea of that.

What is considered "magey" is going to be a personal thing, some will think more along the lines of the mystical magic and energies line, some will think more along the time and space masters line and others will think more along the elemental line like the frostfire set or the firelord set.

Going to completely disagree with you voltaa. Arcane magic is "energy" magic - time and teleportation are a part of that, along with frost, fire, water, shadow, fel, time.

In wow lore, the only magics that are different are life/nature magic, and divine/holy magic.

Regarding mage gear itself, I don't care for the chrono-type gear. My favorite xmog set is the T8 recolor, that's all grey and blue and purple and black, and with a robe, it's freakin awesome. T11 of course is cool, T3 and T7, there is something decent to be said about the BC t4-6 sets, and OP said he didn't like T10 - I don't typically xmog to that one, but I liked it for it's time. Bloodmage - vampiric mage? Fits that theme quite nicely. The mage tier that tier looks exactly like what Blood Queen Lana'thel is wearing (except for the helm), and it looks pretty cool on its own.

Frankly I wish they would remove all time magic, and actually anything involving time travel at all. I never really felt good about the bronze/infinite dragonflight, and I'm very sad that the new expansion is using a horribly stupid plot device - the fact that mages have time based magic just makes it all the more worse. I feel so much less like a typical D&D wizard these days :/

Can't get much more magey than a bunch of scrolls and a dalaran eye, if you're not including that you definitely shouldn't be including tempest.

And hasn't DnD always had Time Stop?

I was never a fan of the "radio tower" set. I liked the Tirisfal set because it was simple. I also liked the Netherwind set because of the arcane obs (though it looks really dated now).

    My favorites are T8 (ulduar/kirin tor set) > T5 > T4
Kirin Tor has pants but I love this set and rarely see anyone else wearing it

That's because the set has pants.

I hold out hope for a tier lock set that's a tunic and pants.

Tunic and pants is more functional than a robe you could trip over or snag on overgrowth.

    But that's just me.

For me T16 is a pandaren style remake of T13. "Too soon" is all I have to say about that

Also I don't like Challenge mode set and T14 - I see unwashed rags made of clown costumes decorated with different colored lightbulbs. Sorry.

And yes, I think that current sets are not very magey. For a long time I thought that Blizzard doesn't have any direction for Mages. Other classes have strong defined identity and their tier have settled themes. On the other hand last couple of expansions Mage is just generic spellcaster and anything will do as their tier set. As a result we have T16 that looks like both T13 and Rogue T16, and has the name similar to last tier set of Cata.

What I wish Mages had is more sets with distinct visual themes and defined forms, not just generic soft-shaped clothes. For example I still don't get why we couldn't have Tol'vir set. Those pseudo-Egyptian masks are just wicked and I don't believe that Kirin Tor wouldn't be interesed in knowledge of Uldum and it's former keepers. It would be ogical to have something like that as T10 and Firelord Vestments as T11.

Meh, you have a point, but I just friggin hate time magic. I'm a fire mage dammit. I conjure balls of fire to melt peoples faces. If someone wants to play Doctor Who or get into a Temporal Cold War or something, I'm cool with that, just don't make me do it.

Which means T16 and T13 are never going to be a part of my personal transmog closet.

Yes. It's a 9th level (the highest level, if you ignore Epic levels which are ridiculous and extremely to obtain through normal play) spell for wizards.

Wizards in DnD are very different than Mages in WoW. A mage would be an Evoker (a specialization a wizard can take which is almost exclusively focused on damage dealing) if he were transposed into DnD. Typical DnD wizards are much more well rounded with a massive list of spells that have a crazy amount of variety to their effects.

All tier /gear is bad tier except for T2 and T3. Case closed!
