If it wasn't for pubs, I would probably have done this myself at some point.

The culture is completely different. I don't know if it is new culture or not but me and others I have talked to experienced that they are very demanding of their BF. I don't know if this is traditional Chinese culture, opinions are divided on that one. For reasons I think:
    - traditionally the man had to woe (I think the English word is) the woman.
    - There are less women then men so they have plenty of choice.

    - Westerners tend to speak to well educated Chinese women because they also speak English and are basically more interesting to talk to. I speak some Chinese but it is not amazing.

    - The one child policy made the kids very spoiled. Westerners tend to be in the eastern coastal cities. The cities that got the economic zones because that is where the business is. A lot of these cities have seen booms in the past 30+ years. A lot of women my age (I am 31) actually don't know much about Mao or any of that. Natives in Shanghai or Guangzhou that have kids with good educations (and thus have more opportunities to get in touch with foreign men) tend to be from rich parents. And their standards of rich are equal to ours. Especially in those 2 cities. Plus their culture is very much based on showing off wealth. So better prepare paying for that Chanel, LV, Versace and such crap

Anyways, that is my experience from inside those cities. I also stayed in Chengdu for a while and you see that the level of wealth especially is much lower.

In England it's usually the woman that causes woe to the man.

    You meant 'woo'.

That guy must have been an old school communist!
"Gamer" is not a bad word. I identify as a gamer. When calling out those who persecute and harass, the word you're looking for is "asshole." @_DonAdams

I get that sarcasm can be hard to read, but come on.

On-topic, it kind of seems like he did this solely to get the point across, but to commit suicide for that reason is a big leap compared to what normal people do.

plot twist: he was highly depressive, and asked to go home to commit suicide anyways, when she asks to stay, he decided he would end it there.

This article reminds me of this:

Just, you know, instead of "fart" put "shopping with girlfriend for more than 5 hours."
These aren't the spoilers you're looking for.

    Move along.
