UK's largest ISP BT now blocks all pornography by default

    Link

BT has announced the launch of a new internet filter designed to protect children online.

The controls will automatically be set to "on" for new users. Customers who do not want the service will have to actively choose not to turn it on.

The filter is designed to block sites deemed unsuitable for children.

The move comes after the government called for internet service providers to filter legal pornography and other adult subjects "by default".

The BT Parental Controls filter will cover any internet-enabled device connected to its home broadband service.

The implementation of the controls will be pre-selected for new users who are setting up their internet connection for the first time. They will have to confirm this option and then will be asked to set a filter level.

There will be three levels - strict, moderate and light - or customers can choose to turn the filter off.

Existing users of BT's broadband will be contacted during 2014 and asked to make a decision on whether or not they want to set up the new service.
The government has said by the end of 2014, 20 million homes - 95% of all homes in Britain with an existing internet connection - will be required to choose whether to switch on a whole-home "family- friendly" internet filter.

Sky and Talk Talk have already implemented their own version of a "family-friendly" filter. Virgin is expected to introduce something similar in the new year.

Dumb. I do not support pornography in any form, but doing this to 'protect the children'? Come on.

As long as you have the option to turn it off, I see no harm in it.

David Cameron has already said that he plans to use the same tools to block other content. Link

This provides the mechanism for the blocking of all kinds of content.

This should concern people, especially the fundamentally anti-democratic and disgusting way that our Prime Minister achieved this.

Blocking of all kinds of content with the option to turn said basic-90s-internet-surfing-technology off? Or to massively censer the internet no matter the consumers choice?

    This is unclear.

If Cameron is interested in blocking 'extremist' sites, sites that he considers harmful I would assume that he thinks it should be binding on everyone and not just those with child-friendly accounts.

Knowing the tendency of consumer behavior, to have the filter set to ON by default is just the logic and right conclusion.

With about 90+% of all computer problems boiling down to the user and not the hardware, that's evidence enough to support the decision.

It would be an issue if it was totally blocked.

I assume the breadth of "extremist" is fairly unclear at this point as well : /

Don't forget this piece of anti-democratic and anti-civil liberties piece of planned legislation alongside it:

    UK to criminalise Rape Porn

    Or this:

    UK to censor "esoteric" websites

Nothing like this happens in a vacuum,

I too wonder how they can actually do this. Not legally, but technically. Aren't there like millions of new "adult" sites created every year? How could they possibly keep up with it? It becomes an ongoing game of cat and mouse as they have to keep looking for new sites to block. Who is paying for that?

I feel sorry for all the married people who used to secretly watch porn and can't anymore because they can't disable it without their spouse knowing.

Taking parenting away from the parents is a bad thing. Your body is shameful kids remember that, sex is only for reproduction not for enjoyment. You're shameful and disgusting if you partake in its enjoyment. Is the message i get from this move.

You block access to porn on the internet by disconnecting the internet. No other way to do it.

I don't understand how they even think this is possible (correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think it is?)

I predict an uptick in divorces after this heinous action. Thanks a lot land of Shakespeare and leprechauns.

It should be an available option and set to off by default. Pandering to the lazy and inept by forcing everyone to make the decision to "allow" it instead of forcing them to make the decision to "block it". Just more of the same crap where responsibility is being removed from people so they don't have to decide and act, they can just let the state take care of it for them.
