Gay marriage ban deemed unconstitutional….in Utah?

    color me genuinely shocked.

SALT LAKE CITY — A federal judge Friday struck down Utah's voter-approved constitutional amendment — which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman — finding that it violates rights to due process and equal protection as set forth in the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

This title is misleading. It makes it seem like he wanted gay marriage in the title.

But yea stuff like this happens all the time its sick I believe in free choice you should be allowed to do what you want with who you want.

I would've figured Utah to be the last state to do it, wow.

I usually am a very right wing guy. But the government being involved in people's sexual preference is beyond stupid. People who care who other people date is beyond stupid.

I am genuinely shocked that this is still an issue anywhere in the US in 2013. People need to move the fuck on already.

I know right!? though I would imagine it would take a federal ruling to do so.

Pretty sure that's what it's going to take in Texas...unfortunately.
In Texas, the list of things we love is only trumped by the list of things we hate.

As a Texan, it pains me to agree with you. Just by going from the crap I see in my Facebook feed from friends defending that Duck Dynasty dude (ie. wholeheartedly agreeing with his gay bashing Bible statements but hiding behind defending his right to free speech, as if that's the issue at hand) it's going to take so much time and work for my state to get out of their Dark Age mentality.

And referencing Scalia's dissent on the DOMA decision, no less.

Well at this point every single state in the US either has gay marriage legalized or banned in some way, so if these same cases keep getting brought up we might see shifts.
Downside I see is that the citizens of that state might find it 'against the will of the people' and result in some pretty harsh backlash.

Its a federal judge guys, local state political bend isn't terribly relevant.

Makes me wonder how this will affect the upcoming vote to add it to Indiana's constitution. Hopefully this will knock the bill right off the table but I doubt it Hoosiers aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

Even then, Texas has a reputation, (or they at least talk big) of telling the federal government to fuck off with this sort of thing. Just look at the abortion ban ordeal this past year.

You don't sound very "right wing". You sound more like a brother libertarian!

Exactly. I love this state, but its rough sometimes for non-republican "free-thinkers". I can't imagine what people of the LBGT community go through, even being bi myself, but bi women don't seem to be nearly as frowned upon as others.

Although the supreme court has said they don't want to rule on this issue, I feel it is inevitable; and the logical conclusion is that marriage as a "tradition" is a religious one and should be removed from the government's purview.

That's why party labels are bad. Rarely does an individually genuinely believe and agree with every stance their supposed party holds. And yet some blindly and ignorantly agree with all their party says just because. It's all kinds of messed up.

Oh man do I agree with you to a degree I can't even articulate well. In my opinion, gay marriage is just another distraction. Our country is so caught up in the "right vs left" mentality, and are more concerned as to whether or not their "side" is winning. There's little difference between the two sides in my opinion, as they're bought and sold by same special interest groups. Then they distract and mislead us with abortion, gay marriage, or gun control; while they (economically) rape the middle and lower classes, as they and their corporate owners laugh their asses off on the way to the bank.

It's actually a very good thing if the Mormons opposed stop and think.

It lays the ground work to attack anti polygamy. How can you fight denial of marriage rites while denying marriage rites to others. ^_-

Bible thumping goes right out the window when it's two attractive girls. The hypocrisy is staggering.

my thoughts exactly, even if they wanted to appeal it the chances of it getting overturned are slim.
