I really want to enjoy FFXIV, I really do...

But unfortunately the community in-game seem to be the most anti-social of all MMORPG's (and I have played many). It isn't so much rudeness but more a lack of communication! I'm now lvl 16 and once seen anybody talk beyond the occasional ad... Nobody answers questions, nobody offers help, nobody assists in kills despite the fact it would benefit them to and generally it gives a isolated feel for new players...

Perhaps I am simply unlucky on my EU server... but the lack of a community feel really doesn't inspire me to invest further £££ which is a shame because it has so much potential

You can try making a new character on a different server and just start map chating and see if there is any life on that server and if there is you can reroll since you are only lvl 16.

Other then that it is a wait and see thing

I received a day one ORAS demo code. I am a chosen one.

I just started 2-3 days ago and yeah, I too would like too see people chatting, except the obvious goldsellers (gilsellers?). It's only more irritating when I get a server queue and when I enter nothing has changed..

Have you tried to get yourself into a Free Company or Link Shell?

Unable to say much about leveling areas, but when max level, when you go to Mor Dhona (where the cool kids hang out), most of the time it is people shouting to recruit for events, once in a while you do get random chatters but fewer.

FC and LS are best way to have chatters going on, there are even LS out there with the sole purpose of socialising, get one of those and you will be fine

You're only level 16? Try hitting max level and your trying to gear up and people don't pay attention in boss fights and make you waste half your day wiping. I really wanted to be able to play that game longer than 3 months but the community ruin it.

back when I played the major problem where the gold seller spammers in all the channels. so i assume most people just have the chat deactivated or just read the guild / group / whisper channel (thats what i did)

the first time I really met some people I sticked to where through the dungeon finder and people asking from which server you are ^^

Is it the same way in cities? Because Zone chat was always running wild when I was in a major city.

I'm often in the cities and vocally its dead despite hundreds of people running around - however just remind me how zone chat works because thus far it's been /shout

I know one (two if you count a vague acquaintance) who plays it, but it seems like they're communicating via Vent or something similar. Probably all in the same Link Shell, too.

Like anything... extra servers at launch..
now that the game has settled, theres some gaps in some servers... others are lively as ever.

just gotta find the right one for you.

Eh, "wait until max level" is a horrible excuse for a genre that has "Massively Multiplayer" in the name. At launch there were a lot of social linkshells and /shout was pretty popping across all zones. Alas, the experience has degraded with people migrating to dungeon queues for leveling. Do ask around the city-states and see what linkshells are out there.

I dunno. I see all the same annoying crap in zone chat that makes me switch to my "guild and party only" chat tab. Just like every mmo.

Most parties are quiet, just like every mmo. Probably because people are mashing buttons.

My FC is incredibly helpful, and polite, and semi large.

I usually try to engage people, and occasionally get a really talkative fun party because of it. Just like every mmo. Actually FFXIV makes it easier since you can macro multiple skills. I usually have a button set to a macro of one rotation. I almost never use it, since it's a terrible idea... but when the fight is going predictably it allows me to get chatty with my party since it gives me 5-10 seconds to type instead of 1.5 like wow.

So I guess YMMV. I've always found FF games to be nicer and more polite than most. Come hop over to behemoth if you want. My FC has a nice spread of US and Aussie, so there's always at least 10 ppl on. Usually 20+. Send me a message if you want the details.

Vastly prefer how it is in this game over "Barrens chat."

If they manage to fix the apparent bugs etc should be awesome

I think it's a matter of getting the right Free Company and Linkshells. A lot of people have gotten bored with FATEs, so it doesn't surprise me people aren't willing to join in, but some of the event FATEs can see a loooot of people at once.

Personally, I find a lot of people say "hey" and chat a bit in Duty Finder. Everybody there seems relatively polite and willing to help.
I'm also part of a pretty active FC on my server (I'm only level 28 on my first char, first class), so they chat a lot too.

It's just a matter of a) getting to the point in the game where most people are hanging out, which is probably end-game, and b) finding a server that has a population level you prefer. Also, keep in mind that a lot of players play this off the PS3 (and soon PS4) and it is a royal pain in the ass to type chat on PS3. Coming from someone who's played it on both PS3 and PC, I gotta say, I would never go back to the PS3 version because of how difficult messaging or even responding to a very simple question on it is. Maybe try looking up some of the most active servers online. I'm sure you can find something for that.

I can't speak for any of the EU servers but NA Ultros has a very active and helpful community. This is an issue I have not experienced in xiv at all. Try being talkative and friendly in dungeons, use the party finder for fate groups and apply to free companies.

I've found that when I've been social, other players have come out of their shells.

It's a good way to get player rep comms
    (Warframe) - Dragon & Typhoon-
(Neverwinter) - Trickster Rogue & Guardian Fighter -

The game is your typical MMO now where people talk only when necessary. Out in zones can be pretty barren, but city chat is lively most of the time. If you're not already in a Free Company or Linkshell, I'd reserve judgement until you have that experience.
