So he appears to be a general of the Iron horde. How will thrall react to having to fight his old mentor and friend? Better yet, how will he come to terms with the realization that the guy was not the hero he made him out to be?

It doesn't mean he won't rebel against the Iron Horde in the future. Remember, even Durotar and the Frostwolves were preparing themselves to join the Iron Horde.

It's not as though we didn't already know Orgrim will be with the Iron Horde and nor was he morally pure in the main universe. I expect he'll heel face turn by the end anyway.

Doomhammer's goals align perfectly with Garrosh's, sans all-out racism. He still aimed for conquest and total domination of the Eastern Kingdoms, only on the orcs own terms free of the shadow council's corruption and allowed the Dragonmaw to enslave Alexstrasza and her flight to that end which isn't exactly a good heroic action.

Much of Doomhammer's non-war heroism came after he was severely humbled by his crushing loss. At least he was honourable (as honourable as a backstabber can be after the fact) and not so single-minded that he would forsake his duty of care to his race, and the young idealistic Thrall respected him utterly for taking that path instead of hanging on to a vain hope of conquest.

It's not really a stretch of the imagination that a Doomhammer free of the shackles of tasting defeat would be totally up for doing the exact same thing as he started during the second war, only this time without the first war shenanigans to hold him back.

Doomhammer has been fooled by Garrosh, as has the majority of the horde, They believe that the Azerothian people are the burning legion basically and their reasons for invading Azeroth is basically summarized to "Better destroy them before they destroy us"

I mean, out of all the potential allies, we end up with the Laughing Skulls?

Anyway, it still doesn't change much for Doomhammer. He never was a big player until he grasped the power after the First War in Azeroth. So, we can show Doomhammer "the Doomhammer" and tell him about the future.
