The apparently retconned the appearance in one of their novels, Rise of the Horde (another retcon explained outside of the video game lore), and now official canon stands saying that the portal on the Draenor side always looked that way, which is sort of bs since Medivh built the one on the Azeroth side by himself, and it wasn't nearly as gigantic as the one on the Draenor side.

Moreover in BTDP WC2 expansion when Khadgar closes the portal it doesn't look nearly that big, it's actually smaller than Medivh's, but then again another retcon.

The whole thing is an aberration meant to stun us with its scale back when we played BC, since almost half the WoW team had quit during BC development because they didn't like the direction Blizzard was taking, no wonder our first quest after meeting Danath was to go kill pigs.
