NITM - a 9-step guide on how to fix a dead server

...And have fun while doing it.

    1. Find a server or a faction presumed to be dead by it's current inhabitants*

*It helps if such server is an old one.
Many of those who took their mains to greener pastures still have alts or former mains on it and like to reminiscence in schmaltzy nostalgia about the „good times“ they had in it's enviroment.
Further I'd like to mention that it should have at least 2-3 guilds stuttering through the normal version of current content, else it is a truely hopeless case.

    2. Have at least 3 evenings / week you can devote to this project.
Also be decent at your class and raidready as far as gear is concerned*

*You don't need to brutally outgear every other player who enters your line of sight, but as far as this expansion is concerned you should have the legendary cloak and an ilvl which will allow you to carry your own weight as a bare minimum.

Oh, and have farsightedness along with the determination to make ample use of it. In addition to that, you might also find some basic communication skills as a rather helpfull instrument.

    3. Have at least one friend who fulfills the above prerequisite as well and is willing to help you in your supposedly impossible undertaking.

    4. Create a guild

    5. Start your adventure!

You will do this by the egregious deed of spamming the otherwise mostly silent trade chat for pug runs to tackle the latest raid on normal difficulty.

Start your effort at least 3 days in advance to the supposed event. In some cases, depending on server and the number of friends who assist you, it may take even longer, perhaps one week or a month until you get all the people required for your first normal pug.
Tenacity is key now! Don't give up even if you are greeted by graveyard silence during the first days or hours, or when your macro does only seem to succeed in drawing a few desperate trolls out from under their rocks; Supposedly dead (or rather comatose) realms may seem lethargic at first, but the exigency is there and will reveal itself as soon as it becomes obvious that you are resolute.
At some point you will get enough serious prospects!

You may find your first pugs to work surpsingly well, at least compared to the general progress (or rather lack there of) plagueing the whole server.
Obviously you will have to take some players who have never before set their virtual foot in any actual raid and require dedicated handholding even on the first pack of trash. Nonetheless the strange miracle of an actual pug will have not escaped the attention of those who were once at the top of progression and the idea will give goosebumps to every small guild that only raids once in a month. The pangs of withdrawl from actual raiding, which all these people thought past their time or substituted by the cheap alternatives of oqueue etc. will assault them every time when your macro disrupts the emptiness of the box at the left bottom of their screen.

The experience of raiding with strangers can never match that of raiding with people you have met before and will definatedly meet again.
Especially for new or returning players and all those who have been confined to mostly solo activities for a very long time due to the lack of a vivid raidscene, a homegrown pug which will treat them with respect and is lead by someone willing to offer help if needed presents a temptation one should not underestimate!

    7. Recruite the puggers to your guild.
Many if not most of them will join in a heartbeat and those who remain sceptical will follow suit as soon as you get enough members to become ranked on sites like wowprogress.

    8. Start advertising directly for the guild.
Likewise be open for a guildmerge, but as a rule of thumb only participate in such a project in case it basically supposes that the other guild's members melt into your own infrastructure. So early on it is not advisable to take any unpredictable risks.
Nevertheless, do not refuse anyone who wants to join you, not even a level 1. Even the most clueless players might improve to become a great asset to your raidteam one day and if they don't they could still have friends who may. Or not. In any case, they will neither harm you; The worst they can do would be to aid your newborn raidteam with repair money via the cashflow perk, as they do their questing, scenarios and whatever else.
(Obviously you will be required to maintain a vigilent eye on your growing guild and be as fast and resolute as possible when it looks like somebody might give you a bad name. However this will rather rarely be the case, as most notorious trolls and troublemakers are naturally drawn to high population servers where they can hope to hide among the pure mass).

    9. Organize your guild's activities in such a way that you can offer something to everyone.
Be as intransigent as feasable about your progress team; replace players who do not perform and strive to bring the best possible setup you can muster for each boss. Bench yourself on occasion or farmruns if needed, bench your friends, be upright and absolutely uncorruptible in this regard.
The higher you climb on the server's ranklist the more you will gain, along with everyone else in your guild and on the whole server which will be incited and reinvigorated by this anomaly which manifested itself contrary to any prediction they could proceed.
At the same time you should not ignore or disregard those who might be, at the moment or permanently, out of question for your main team; offer them additional runs adequate for their skill and/or gearing needs. You and your raiders should fill those up with alts if necessary.
On the long run your goal is to educate those people who really like raiding about the means they need to get the most fun out of this game and simoultanuously breed replacements for anyone of your current raiders who might quit or go on a break. Remember, the more happy players you'll have the better your reputation will be and the more capable ones will be inclined to join, re-transfer their mains or get friends to the server and your guild.
Above anything else people will not be able to disregard your well intention no matter how bad the server's old-established guilds will strive to denigrate you and in time a surprisingly large chunk of your realm will mostly follow what you preach by example.

I am not simply claiming all these things; Napalm In The Morning is proof.
We started our first pugs on EU-Nordrassil at some point in late October 2013 and are now the Horde's top guild with a progress of 9/14 HC ,obtained under quite adverse circumstances and at a main raiding schedule of 5-7 hours/week.

I am making this post to invite more dedicated raiders from everywhere across the european reach of the world of warcraft to take part in the amazing community we created and a Horde that might still be listed as low population but which has grown by roughly 20% over the course of the last few months.
It doesn't matter to us whether you have played in world top 10 guilds ever since wow was merely a sparkle in the mind of a drunken game developer or you just happen to be a greengeared newcomer. We only care for your long-term interest in clearing current content on the most challenging difficulty and your capability to abide to 3 simple rules as listed below:

    1. Act mature and respectfull towards any other person you meet in this game.
    2. Take a deep breath and envision rule nr 1 once again.
    3. Common sense. You are supposed to have it. Use it.

Whilst everyone who fits this criteria is welcome, some of those who do are more desireable than others in hindsight to our intent to add the last cherries on top of our future 20man Mythical team.

To be more precise, we are particulary interested in

    - Healers (preferably Paladins and Shamans)
    - DPS (Shadow Priests, Enhancement and Elemental Shamans, Mages, Warlocks, Feral and Moonkin Druids, Retribution Paladins, Rogues)
    - Any player who considers both his/her tanking and dps specs as equally worthwhile.
    - One raidleader supposed to coordinate altruns and gearing runs. (This one should have previous experience or at least be damn good at persuading).

To contact us please register at napalminthemorning.guildlaunch.com
As an alternative you may also whisper Bogeyman or Ehane ingame.

Thanks for taking your time to read all this text and even if you are not interested in joining NITM, I still hope the little guide will prove helpful to anyone who ever finds him/herself stranded amongst a dwindling community and is willing to put in some effort to make it worthwhile again.

Because only losers quit without even trying!
