If you found a lot of money on the street, would you keep it?

As the title says. You're strolling around on the filth ridden streets of your neighborhood and come across a lot of money or a wallet on the pavement. Would you keep it for yourself or try to be "noble" and try to find whoever dropped it in an attempt to return it to them?

    It depends.

A friend of my dad found a wallet like that... only to see that the directions in it led him to a very, very dangerous neighborhood. He almost ended up beaten and robbed.

    So it depends.
Really sucks if they start to limit their vision for an expansion just to get the next one out faster.

Yup. It depends on further circumstances surrounding the event. I'm not about to put
myself in danger to return a wallet. Though, I may just drop it off at a police station.

All depends. If it's just a money clip and I didn't see who dropped it, i'd probably pocket it assuming it's not more than $200. If it was a wallet, i'd simply find out whose it was and return it to them.

I'd keep a few 20's or so, but a wallet, no way.

I've lost my wallet twice before and can tell you it's one of the most annoying things to replace.

It's just to cruel to make someone go through that...

That sounds like a sensible plan.

What exactly is "A lot of money"?

I can't imagine anyone carrying around more than $100... If its a wallet, it has ID, so I'd just return it. If it's a wallet with nothing in it at all with like.... $10,000, I'd probably take that to police. It would only cause trouble otherwise, and most other people who would keep it would probably just spend it on drugs.

I actually can't think of any situation where I'd keep it, unless it was a wallet with nothing in it at all, except for under like $200, simply because I wouldn't know who to give it to.

I imagine the rightful owner of the cash would be happy enough with this outcome.

Seriously, what is this shit? If you find money, it still has a legal owner other than you for a period of time in most counties. The poll should be "steal the money", or "attempt to locate the legal owner".

A wallet yes I would turn in or even call the person to return it to them regardless of how much money it contains. A large sum of money though with no identification?, hell no I wouldn't turn that in.

I'd look around if anybody dropped money. If nobody is I'd take it for myself. If it was someone I knew, I'd give it back to them. A similar experience happened to me in High School and he knew me. He...took the money that I had. So yeah....food for thought. I could take it to the police station but there'd have to be one nearby. This is a hypothetical so yeah...

If there's actual ID I'd give it back indefnitely.

That is, if it was a sum larger than like 5 bucks. Small sums of around 5 bucks are unlikely to be sought out at the police station so in that scenario I'd just pick it up and put it somewhere visible, like on one of those electrical cabinets.
Well here it won't work, the police would stay with the money (they may give the identification back)

Do to others as you'd have them do to you, I suppose, so with that, I'd go with returning it.

I've once been pickpocketed by noble thieves. They stole the wallet, took out the money, and delivered my wallet to the personnel of the cinema I was in at that moment. If you're gonna keep the money, at least drop the wallet off, take it from me. It sucked to lose 20 euros or so but my ID, my cards, my photos.. Everything was in it, I keep memories of stuff in my wallet. Losing it sucks.

If I'd find just money, anything more than 30-50 euros I'd drop off at the police, anything less and I honestly doubt I could be troubled/owner would have been troubled. I'd soothe my concience (which is already wildly roaring with outrage while I'm thinking of just keeping it) by donating it to a homeless dude or some charity.

So..if we are speaking hypothetically; if I went to Vegas a month ago and was walking thru the casino checking out all the slots and stuff, and hypothetically came across a machine that had a wallet sitting in the seat. And sat down on that wallet and sat there for ten mins playing the machine. And then I got up, in the process somehow happening to shove that wallet down the front of my pants. And then when going to the bathroom and when opening this hypothetical wallet found $6547 US dollars in cash. Hmmmm....what would I do?

Damn that was a great four days.

I actually didn't put a specified amount because "a large amount" can always be different to everyone.

Leave it right where it is. It's probably a police sting. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/...icle-1.1349629
