Why do prison murders still happen?

If the point of putting a murderer in prison is to rehabilitate him, why do situations in which inmates are killed by other inmates arise?

I worked as a correctional officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Correctional Institutions Division for 3 years. Prison rapes don't happen anywhere near as often as TV and movies make it seem, the same can be said for murders. You cannot place a violent individual in prison and expect that he will change. Violent people are just violent, and they don't want to change. Especially the new younger generation of offenders, they just like to do "gangster" shit and give 0 fucks about the consequences.

That's what's going to happen when you sentence someone to prison for the rest of their lives. American prisons for example are nothing to do with rehabilitation, it's just a punishment. And when someone knows they're not going to get out then they have nothing to lose

Prison murders and rapes happen because prisons are as much about rehabilitation as Prop 8 was about "protecting traditional marriage".

Because they haven't figured out that they need to give all the prisoners a gun - so that their mutual fear of equal death dealing would ensure nobody would risk hurting each other.

I keep suggesting this to my biological brother who works as a prison guard, sighting it as a perfect way to demonstrate his belief that more guns in public reduces crime - but for some reason he tends to resent my suggestion and shrug it off. /boggle

Why do people think that people who evade paying taxes end up in prison with murderers and rapists? There's classification, and different custody levels. They don't send Mr Joe moneybucks who didnt pay his taxes to a unit with hardcore murderers, serial killers and shit
