OpenSSL Bug affects roughly two thirds of the web, opening it up for eavesdropping

    Source: http://arstechnica.com/security/2014...oulette-style/

OpenSSL is a technology developed to encrypt data being sent over the web, and it's used by just about anything you use (Apple, Yahoo, etc).

Google engineers who found the bug have since released a patch to fix it, but it's still up to the individual vendors to use the patched version for their applications.

    Crazy stuff.

Ability to review openly still does not guarantee that someone can spot problems.
It can happen just as readily in closed software, as recently demonstrated by Apple in a similar case, also with SSL.

I don't follow. The bug in OpenSSL affects closed software which uses it.

Pretty wild, eh? It certainly begs the question ... are some things better implemented in "higher" languages, which will cause a program to blow up and die?
