Do you support the idea of the US dismantling its military?

In the light of Russia & Ukraine, I thought I'd toss this question out there to see how people feel. Plus a poll!

Dismantling the Military is a ridiculous idea considering the amount of enemies the USA has, the problem the US Military faces is the same as the British Armed Forces, too much waste and corruption. I will give you an example of how things are messed up....

The Royal Navy pays £1 for a small transistor that you pay 10p for in a hardware store, he reason it costs 90p extra is because it comes in a watertight bags that floats during a flood (lol?) and comes with a serial number. This is just one example, combine that with the other thousands of things each unit needs on a daily basis and you can see where the money is going, not to the men and women and not to new equipment, it is going to over priced firms that sell common items but "To military standard".

USA should not dismantle its army, but it should adopt a more isolationist policy where it does not meddle in the affairs of sovereign countries as often as it has done throughout its history. The number of military bases the US has around the world is overkill to say the least.

Remove your bases from countries that do not want you there and instead protect your own borders.

What has Russia & Ukraine got to do with the US disbanding their military?

Why would the US want to dismantle it at all? Are you hoping the Canadians will invade?

  5. #5
On the contrary. They should increase the defense spending to around 16% of GDP.

    Dismantle? No.

Seriously look at their spending levels, audit, cut wasteful spending on go nowhere military projects? Yes

We spend more on military than all of the other major superpowers COMBINED. Yearly

Dismantle it completely. When was the last time the military actually protected us?

I don't count ANY of the bullshit going on in the Middle East for the last 25 years "protecting".

Dismantle an army so the US is defenseless? Are you serious? There's no way anyone thinks this is a good idea, surely...

Nukes have made the game different.

If any country can render nuclear weapons obsolete then they will be able to call themselves the next world power.

They should cut it, by making it more efficent. Right now so much money goes to nothing. As the first post said, they're paying 10x for small transistors as everyone else.

But that will probably never happen, so they should just keep it as it is, with the same increase every year. Relocate resources from personel to technology though.

USA might be the big bully in the classroom of the world, but it's better than the would be bullies, Russia and China. At least USA protects it's NATO gang.

I'd be about out of a job so no. Also have fun dealing with 5 million + unemployed and thousands of contractors going under. The US would have to privatize its military and most of you are pretty liberal so I don't think you'd want that.

Dismantle? That's idiotic at best. It is time to start reducing spending on it though.

Although I'd agree that some defense spending should be cut, specifically on all the DoD's projects overseas like here in Japan. You wouldn't believe the kind of money they waste out here on diplomats and other dumb things. The US is very economically reliant on its military, if it were to go under imagine 20-30 fortune 500s going under because that would be about the same impact.

Pretty much any country dismantling its military isn't a good idea, and the USA is definitely no exception. I'd certainly agree they could reduce military spending, and more importantly spend money better and cut inefficiency in projects, but dismantling entirely is a laughably stupid and naive idea.

They should probably re-evaluate military spending but they shouldn't dismantle their military, hell they are the last nation in the world who should be doing that with all the people who dislike them.
