Cliffs: Middle school holds an annual honors night, honoring students who achieved various things throughout the year. Butthurt parents of kids who aren't invited to it complain it's too "exclusive." School permanently cancels the event.
Just about sums up the state of America these days. For the last few decades we've been pretending that loser's can't lose (everybody get's a trophy, no red ink on tests as it's too upsetting, can't tell a kid they gave a wrong answer) and now we have reached the point that winner's can't win. (post a photo of yourself in great shame = can't do that makes fat people feel bad, no honor roles or award ceremonies = can't do that makes the other kids feel bad, etc.)"Members of the school community have long expressed concerns related to the exclusive nature of Honors Night," the email stated.
By having the recognition ceremonies during team-based ceremonies, it will "afford us the opportunity to celebrate the individual and collective success of all students and their effort, progress and excellence."
Our inability to recognizes both winners and losers has definitely contributed to all the observed and perceived negative traits of the Millennial generation (entitlement, inability to hear criticism or deal with failure, etc.).
We've raised an entire generation focused on building up their self esteem at all costs, with no regard to actually developing or encouraging achievement or positive character traits.
And it's getting worse.
Edit: Adding this video, because it's hilarious and apt.
