The WoW'ification of America - School cancels honors nights for being too "exclusive"

    http://eastgreenwich.patch.com/group...s-honors-night

Cliffs: Middle school holds an annual honors night, honoring students who achieved various things throughout the year. Butthurt parents of kids who aren't invited to it complain it's too "exclusive." School permanently cancels the event.

"Members of the school community have long expressed concerns related to the exclusive nature of Honors Night," the email stated.

By having the recognition ceremonies during team-based ceremonies, it will "afford us the opportunity to celebrate the individual and collective success of all students and their effort, progress and excellence."
Just about sums up the state of America these days. For the last few decades we've been pretending that loser's can't lose (everybody get's a trophy, no red ink on tests as it's too upsetting, can't tell a kid they gave a wrong answer) and now we have reached the point that winner's can't win. (post a photo of yourself in great shame = can't do that makes fat people feel bad, no honor roles or award ceremonies = can't do that makes the other kids feel bad, etc.)

Our inability to recognizes both winners and losers has definitely contributed to all the observed and perceived negative traits of the Millennial generation (entitlement, inability to hear criticism or deal with failure, etc.).

We've raised an entire generation focused on building up their self esteem at all costs, with no regard to actually developing or encouraging achievement or positive character traits.

    And it's getting worse.

Edit: Adding this video, because it's hilarious and apt.

Seems it becoming more like this, especially bolded parts.

    The ten rules state:

You're not to think you are anything special.
You're not to think you are as good as we are.
You're not to think you are smarter than we are.
You're not to convince yourself that you are better than we are.
You're not to think you know more than we do.
You're not to think you are more important than we are.
You're not to think you are good at anything.

You're not to laugh at us.
You're not to think anyone cares about you.
You're not to think you can teach us anything.

No, instead they get honoured infront of everyone in the entire school.

    From the article:

Instead, students who would normally be recognized at the annual spring tradition will be honored during team-based recognition ceremonies and graduation.
Seems like instead they get more recognition, rather than an "exclusive" circle-jerk.

A thread has no point when the information being presented in the OP is inaccurate or omitted to suit their bias.

I don't know what Honor's Night is, but I guess it's something where only the winners can celebrate? So I guess that is why people are saying it is exclusive. Winners are still winners, so nobody is taking that away from them. But someone who is only second place shouldn't feel like a failure. I think that if you treat people who have won a contest, or whatever, like they are something special, it's only gonna create arrogant people.

The information is 100% accurate, I even included the quote that references what you are trying to talk about.

They want to "honor" the kids in a team setting, while pretending to honor all the other students too. They're purposing to basically dilute the recognition by mixing in a bunch of other crap as well, so as to not make other kids feel excluded.

As someone else posted, thankfully the school has reversed course, however it does show the exact mindset I was describing.

By honouring them at graduation you say "here fuckers, look what would have happened if you tried".

Also the "it's all the millennials fault" line is hilarious, considering it was the parents who complained.

    "Wowification" excellent.
Entitlement, oh wow such new use of vocabulary.

There are some legitimate reasons to be unhappy about that article, but dear god you're just repeating a bunch of jibberish and insulting people.

    What's with this title lol?
If this happened in WoW, Heroic Raiding would be canceled permanently.

If it happened in a school, its likely an influential families' child was not going to make it as a part of this.
When I was in High School, the way this was combated was simply by giving the children of the influential families the grades they needed to get where they wanted to be.

    It's silly either way.

"All the kids who made A+ this year will have a late night party! All the rest of you who passed with nothing special will get just that, nothing special."

God forbid we celebrate children just passing. Not everyone is gifted with a higher than average IQ at a young age. Or they have learning and reading problems like I did growing up.

Not everyone is a world class sprinter either, but I don't demand the Olympics stop giving away gold medals in a special ceremony because it's too "exclusive"

This isn't a special event where only the best of the best compete. School is mandatory for all kids so they can learn, not to be talked down to because they didn't learn well enough.

    Think this is relevant
We have faced trials and danger, threats to our world and our way of life. And yet, we persevere. We are the Horde. We will not let anything break our spirits!"

So let's get this straight, are those students still competiing? And did those students who did compete, did they win or lose? Or did we do away with scorekeeping altogether.

    Yup, still winners, still losers...

You do know that many millennials are of age to have children in middle school right?

Funny, all of the schools in my district did this every year and no one ever complained. Either you put in the hard work and effort or you didn't. Very simple concept.
