Why women are not drafted in military?

Only Isreael and Norway have women included in military consciption, why isnt this common?

Women can work as soldiers. Israel has shown this for decades even though women have not been in operational forces in IDF for a long time before 2001 when women were allowed in IDF again. 1500 women are drafted in IDF every year, and they even have their own special units and battalions which have engaged in combat many times. Norway will have gender neutral consciption next year, even though they have selective draft.

If the argument is that women are weaker, then simply dont allow weak women to enter army and same goes for men. Reasonably healthy woman has no trouble working in basic infantry.

The draft laws were written before many women were even able to have women rights and be even able to even join in combat.

    Sexism, I assume.

I guess that seems to be on the road to ending at some point, though.

The last one was during Vietnam, so, no, not really.

No, and no one will be for the foreseeable future.

Because to most people it's a non issue, owing to the fact no one has been drafted the past 30/40 years.

Any changing to the draft scripture would be symbolic in nature.

I'd much rather have it repealed than altered though.

That made sense 100 years ago and beyond that because warfare was all about physical strenght, women could not have fought properly against men with bare hands, axes etc.

Todays warfare is all about technology, intelligence, and support from wide variety of friendly troops from air and ground. Especially air superiority is what decides the outcome of war. There is no excuse for not including women in military draft.

I would prefer women not being drafted for a number of reasons. Most important would be because they could have children or may be pregnant. Its not fair to the kids to be without their mother.

Well, if every able bodied man and woman was drafted, there would be no adults to look after children except the disabled or sick.

Men could have children too... it's sorta how we exist. And it's not fair to be without
    either parent.

Don't know about Israel, but in Norway women can still choose not to join, while men are not given that choice when drafted. The only mandatory part for women is turning up for the day they test your capabilities and medical history to see if you're fit to join. After that, it'll take about a year before men are drafted and women are given the option of joining, if they meet the requirements.

As you say though, they will be making the drafts gender neutral, which is a big step. There will still be a lot fewer women than men in the military, simply because more men fit the requirements, but as long as the law is neutral I guess that's some sort of victory for equality.

Not all able bodied people would be drafted in battlefield, also there is large number of people who are not in active reserve anyway due to age or other reason such as civial job.

In addition, it'd be silly to draft both parents unless perfectly necessary.

Why don't we ever hear of feminists fighting for the right to be drafted?

If it came down to pretty much end-of-world or country existence, I would be willing to bet a given government would draft every person it can regardless of gender to fight for survival.

In a more practical sense, it is because women are less physically strong than men in generalization, and you want to field the strongest you can. Though granted, if you have any highly talented shooters that are women, I'd say bring them along as well. But I'm sure you can bring up historical roles and mind sets and all sorts of reasons as to why. Personally, I say let them if women want to go, I'd be happy to trade them my place in a draft over dying. Self preservation first to me; I'm not at the point where dying for ideas and concepts is appealing, especially in this cynical day and age.
