Not quite wiped out yet. There's still a few hundred cases per year, mostly in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Somalia. Cases are also popping up in Syria, due to the civil war hampering vaccination efforts.

The key issue is you put OTHER people at risk when you dont vaccinate

Thats the crazy part. In some of those places, and even in Europe, Polio cases are RISING. Not by lots, but by notable amounts. The fact that any disease is rising indicates something, somewhere, is not working correctly as far as disease control goes. Either something is causing it, or something is not preventing it.

(1% may not seem like much, but thats about 500 people a year.)

The reason is Measles, Mumps, Rubella (covered under MMR) can kill, especially in younger people. The big hubbub is largely because something that we've done pretty well in knocking out (Like Polio, smallpox, etc), are starting to make a comeback largely because of misinformation and 'anti-vax' groups.

Think of it this way. Pretend that a group of people started convincing people that it's totally fine to eat uncooked, untreated fish, poultry, and pork. Not only that, but they actually started getting serious support. Wouldn't that scare the crap out of you?

EDIT: I should probably note... The 'Vaccination Debate' is sort of a loose one... Some people refer to it for early childhood vaccination. Other people refer to it in regard to yearly flu shots. These are two completely, utterly unrelated and separate debates.
We have an outbreak of mumps and measles right now in central Ohio that started in a community that was not vaccinated and it spread to the Ohio State University campus where there were more people that were not vaccinated. http://www.dispatch.com/content/stor...preading_.html
That article is about a month old and the numbers of infected has increased since then. We are well on our way to having a similar numbers of mumps cases here that the entire country had last year.

Science denial seems to be one of the biggest unintended side effects of the internet.

People denying global warming, people against vaccines, you name it.

The internet has fostered every idiot thinking they are an expert and know better than trained professionals. They seek each other out in online communities that are echo chambers of misinformation.

It's basically Dunning Kruger just organized with technology.

The problem is stupid/ignorant people don't know their place, they think their opinion trumps hard scientific data.

you know, just because my grandmother survived Small Pox without a single scar doesn't mean it should be allowed to exist because "omg she survived it perfectly!!"

Oh, we know exactly what the problem is, specifically, anti-vaxxers (Europe), fundamentalists killing vaccination workers (Afganistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Nigeria. The CIA's little fake vaccinations stunt DID NOT help matters. The idiots who approved that should be sent to Pakistan to escort vaccination workers.), and civil war disrupting medical care, including vaccinations (Syria).

It's finding solutions that is the issue.

Measles can leave children brain damaged or dead. Not vaccinating your child threatens not only your child, but others your child may come into contact with.

If you get chicken pox, the virus persists in your nerve cells, and later in life can come back as an excruciatingly painful attack of "shingles".

Other childhood illness can also kill or have serious morbidity.

As for my opinion retards dont trust peer reviewed proven scientific facts and prefer to listen to the scaremongering quacks who peddle there lies.

I got vaccinated as a kid and i turned out alright and i will make sure my kids will too.

Aside from the obvious public health relevance, it angers me on a more base level. I have sheer contempt for anti-science, anti-modern ideas. I've spent ten years working in immunology labs, and for some uneducated blowhard to tell me that they're more knowledgeable about the topic than I am is just plain insulting.

    I didnt know that o.O

catching Osama wasnt worth making generations mistrust vaccinations, because now they can point to an actual conspiracy that came true.

I think to better understand the situation, you need to better understand how vaccines work.

    1. Vaccines are just weaker strains of the same virus/bacteria.
    2. Your White Blood Cells (cells that attack foreign bacteria and parasites) aren't Federation Starships in a sense that they are naturally equipped with Photon Torpedo's, Phaser-Banks, and Shields.
    3. If a person gets sick from a particular virus, and can't recover from it, anybody can say that their body's micro-organic defenses aren't equipped or trained to combat the foreign invader. The opposite is true too. If your White Blood Cells can attack and kill the foreign invaders (germs, bacteria, parasites, virus, etc...), then you will eventually get healthy depending on how efficient they work.
    4. Vaccines help your White Blood Cells to learn and attack the same foreign invaders.

Here is the issue with Vaccines.
    1. You can still run a risk of somebody dying from the weaker strain of the same virus or bacteria.
    2. Sometimes the vaccine isn't completely wiped out by the White Blood Cells. So that Virus or Bacteria stays hidden somewhere in your body, and effects you in a bad way. I.e. Authism, etc...
    3. The purpose of a bacteria or virus is to consume, and find other sources of food. Humans kill animals to consume their flesh and survive. Well, Virus and bacteria do the same thing, but they consume the nutrients found in our bodies at a micro-organism world view.
    4. Different Strains of the same bacteria or virus can overcome White Blood Cells that can kill weaker strains of the same Virus. No two strains of the same bacteria or virus are made a like. Strain A could be like Pee Wee Herman. Weak, annoying, talkative, goofy, and your cells have dealt with this strain because of the vaccine. Strain B is Pee Wee Herman with steroids, and they are equipped with Japanese Steel (Katana Swords). This strain talks less, but it has bigger muscles. So it's easier for them to overcome your White Blood Cells.

Here is how it works without the Vaccine.
    1. You have two armies. One army is the invading foreign organism, and the other is your White Blood Cells.
    2. If you hold Darwin's theory of the Survival of the Fittest to be true, the invading virus or bacteria is stronger on the food chain because, simply, your White Blood Cells don't know how to combat the invaders properly. They were never provided a manual, weapons, or technology to deal with the situation. Your White Blood Cells may not even consider them to be an enemy, so the Virus will be all ninja to them.
    3. The virus charges and kills the White Blood Cells. White Blood Cells are either senile or in a panic, or attempt to attack the virus but fail miserably at it.
    4. Once the virus kills all your cells, you're dead...

Here is how it works with the Vaccine.
    1. You're White Blood Cells come up to the weaker strain of the virus (in a state of being drunk, in a state of wondering off into space, in a state of being weak, in a state of being blind, in a state of seeing three White Blood Cells instead of one, etc) and murder them.
    2. When the same strain comes, and the source isn't the vaccine, the White Blood Cells "murder" them...
    3. Your body stays healthy.

The overall solution to killing all virus.
    A. Man-made Nanites that co-exist in your body, and the Nanites are equipped with micro-manufactured laser to burn enemy invaders.
