I need some help with learning about the X-Men.

The only things I know about the X-Men came from the recent movies. I never read any super hero comics as a kid; I read stuff like Archie, Richie Rich, Scooby Doo.

Sine watching the movies, I have developed a desire to know more about them. I read the wikipedia entry on them, and yes, it gave facts, but it was too rigidly explained, with not enough "personality".

With what is available today, what would you recommend as a starting point to learn more about the X-Men? Please be specific. I know it might be a graphic novel. But which one? Or is there maybe a great website to visit? ( I don't plan on spending a lot of money to learn about them, but maybe if there was a good single book to buy, that would be great )

    Thanks.

Honestly, wikipedia has the lore/story behind all the x-men. Free and condensed, just search each specific super hero, and read away.

X-men Wikia. It will take you weeks, if not months, to read through it all.

Can branch out into specific characters/events from there.

The FOX movies stray heavily, taking a ton of liberty with characters. I can't stand them to be honest.

To be fair, "days of future past" has been retold what, like five times in the comics and cartoons? There is no single constant storyline.

I'll prolly get yelled at for this. But watch the animated series from the 90's. It was a really good show. There were inconsistencies, but then again, so does the comic series.

The xmen history in comics is beyond convoluted. The dominant story for reference of the Marvel Now line of xmen is probably the Avengers vs Xmen saga:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avengers_vs._X-Men

Or the return of original xmen in All-New Xmen (that should show how convoluted it is), but it's tied to AvX:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-New_X-Men

The critically acclaimed John Byrne and Chris Claremont runs, don't really mean anything to today's continuity:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Claremont

If you like Avengers as well, might want to check out Uncanny Avengers, which combos some of the movie favorites from both franchises into a single team:

Deadpool is too cool for the X-Men. He is best solo.

Marvel is hard to understand. My best advice is to read it, watch it, enjoy it, and try not to delve into it. Naturally, the same story trying to get told by 100s of authors and screenwriters over the years has turned into a mess full of discrepencies, loopholes and continuity errors that you'll start to scratch your head real fast. Every decade X-men is "Revived, made fresh again" and "All that old stuff never happened" (Case in point, the newest X-man movie's ending). They all try to begin their X-man story at the origin, like Christian Bale's Batman.

Still, they're entertaining, and enjoy them. But IMO, avoid Marvel Universe stories. Its like a massive circle-jerk of authors trying to write in the most powerful being in the universe as their own creations. It leads to 1000's of "MOST POWERFUL EVER!" and opens up like 10000 alternate dimensions whenever one writer decides he doesn't like the other writer's writing.

I like Ryan Reynolds, also. I think he can lend the right kind of dark/psychotic humor to pull off Deadpool well. I am waiting for this movie, and am hoping that it does well. I wonder if they will go into the whole Weapon X storyline concerning Wolverine and Deadpool's connection.
