Greatest Rock and roll lyrics in history

    I'll go with

I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer
Because the future's uncertain and the end is always near

    Jim Morrison & the Doors

    Or maybe

The sound that you're hearing is only the sound of the low spark of high heeled boys

People are Strange, when you're a stranger. Faces look ugly when you're alone.

Jim Morrison & The Doors. People are Strange

To be honest... That man was a fucking poet, you could pick almost any Doors lyrics and they'd be a winner.

    Also:

You're a microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan, designed and directed by his Red Right Hand

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Red Right Hand. Again the whole song is outstanding, lyrics dripping in meaning, but that is a particularly fine example.

You run and you run to catch up with the sun,
    but it's sinking...
racing around, to come up behind you again.

The sun is the same, in a relative way,
    but you're older...
shorter of breath, one day closer to death.

    Pink Floyd, "Time"

Almost everyone of their songs is an epic poem.

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, it is really great.
"Mama, ooh, Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters "

    Imagine- John Lennon
"You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one"

Welcome to the Jungle - GUNS N' ROSES

    "Welcome to the jungle
    It get's worse here everyday
Ya learn to live like an animal
In the jungle where we play
If you got a hunger for what you see
    You'll take it eventually
You can have anything you want
But you better not take it from me"

What counts as "Rock and Roll"?
If we just generally go with "greatest Rock lyrics" I would have to go with a rather new yet already broken up band called Conditions and their song "Comfort Far Away":

    Show me I'm
    Capable of great things
    Tell me I
    Haven't wasted my body

    Help me out
    Allow me to truly exist
    Guide me out
'Cause I know I'm better than this

When I sleep, when I dream
    Does somebody
    Take control of me

When I sleep, when I dream
    Does someone else
    Take control of my body

Why did you pick those lyrics? They don't seem very special to me. I don't get it.

Are we talking strictly rock 'n' roll or can we include metal, too?
I'm not much into rock 'n' roll but currently these lyrics mean much to me

She's got a smile it seems to me
    Reminds me of childhood memories
    Where everything
Was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
She takes me away to that special place
And if I'd stare too long
I'd probably break down and cry
And even though it's reached new heights, I rather like the restless nights. It makes me wonder, makes me think there's more to this, I'm on the brink. It's not the fear of what's beyond, it's just that I might not respond! I have an interest, almost craving, would I like to get to far in?!

a lot like me - offspring

    How does it feel?
    When you have it all?
    How can you live?
    With nothing at all?

    Where do you run?
    Where do you go?
When the holes in your truth
    Are starting to show?

    And the rain comes
And the world is on my head
    Crave the sun
But I can’t get out of bed
someone else might have gotten it wrong.

The lyrics are about escaping reality. But they also ask if it's the right choice to always escape and get worn out rather than facing the problems of real life. It's also about not giving up and searching for the better part of yourself.

    Soundgarden-Burden in my hand

    Follow me into the desert
    As thirsty as you are
Crack a smile and cut your mouth
    and drown in alcohol

    or...

    Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood-Pentacostal

    Down so long now Jesus
You know I been down so long
    Far turned out and freezing
Won't you carry my body home

    This is why I came
To live a life in a day
With a fire in my head

Who's got the keys to the workhouse?
    Satan has locked the door
Got no wings to take us
Up off of that killing floor

    Is this why you came?
    To handle a snake
And wear a new starry crown

    There's no phoenix rising
To a mansion up on the hill
    This albatross I'm riding
Is a train just standing still

    This is how I came
With a stench and a stain
To be washed in the blood

Probably some of the best lyrics.

Really though, probably some of the better lyrics are in this.

all i ever did was look up to you
and if all i ever did was let, let you down
    ain't nothing stopping me now.
was it everything you hoped for?
was it all of that and more?
    too much too soon?
or too good to be true?
was it everything you hoped for?
was it all of that and more?

Basically, he looked up to a friend of his and his friend "abandoned" him because he thought everyone was holding him back. That's his side at least.

Those lyrics resonate with you, but are not very special or beautifully/uniquely crafted.

    Gojira - Born in Winter

    Before all things reborn again
You learn the painful breath of time
Cold mourning stretches out your arms
To the mighty warmth of the golden sun
Seem all have gone insane for gold
All was created out of the night
We're all born from the burst of a star
The day you'll come to life you'll realize
Expanding force to life where you belong
And in the winter cold, with opened eyes
You'll find the strength to fight and stand upright
One day you'll walk the world and keep in mind
The heart you've been given in winter time
And through the bitter cold, with opened eyes
You'll find the strength to fight and stand upright

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.

    Ooh, it makes me wonder,
    Ooh, it makes me wonder.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.

    Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune,
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long,
And the forests will echo with laughter.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
    And it makes me wonder.

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind?

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
    Under an old street light
    Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
    She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
    There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
    never get to be cool.
    You cared enough to post.

    "Wish You Were Here"

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
    What have we found?
    The same old fears.
    Wish you were here.

    "Echoes"

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
    Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

    Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do I take you by the hand
And lead you through the land
And help me understand the best I can
And no one calls us to move on
And no one forces down our eyes
    No one speaks
    And no one tries
No one flies around the sun

Cloudless every day you fall upon my waking eyes
Inviting and inciting me to rise
And through the window in the wall
Come streaming in on sunlight wings
A million bright ambassadors of morning

And no one sings me lullabies
And no one makes me close my eyes
So I throw the windows wide
And call to you across the sky.

    "Us And Them"

    Us and Them
And after all we're only ordinary men
    Me, and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do
Forward he cried from the rear
    and the front rank died
And the General sat, as the lines on the map
    moved from side to side
    Black and Blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
    Up and Down
And in the end it's only round and round and round
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
    the poster bearer cried
Listen son, said the man with the gun
    There's room for you inside
    Down and Out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about
    With, without
And who'll deny that's what the fightings all about
Get out of the way, it's a busy day
And I've got things on my mind
For want of the price of tea and a slice
    The old man died

    All by Pink Floyd inc.

A few songs by Rush come to mind:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf8jvSPA3XQ - Subdivisions
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l63eixpYRWk - Limelight
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpOyQhgM1FU - Free Will
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ84JkYDa3U - Spirit of the Radio
All this machinery making modern music
    Can still be open hearted
    Not so coldly charted
It's really just a question of your honesty, yeah
    Your honesty
One likes to believe in the freedom of music
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
    Shatter the illusion of integrity
