I think its a categorical and labeling error - that is, their error stems from what religion is defined to be.

Religion incorporates elements of supernatural phenomenon, that is attributed to the actions of a incorporeal, almighty, and all knowing being (AKA God), whereas atheism... is the expressed non belief of the supernatural.

Though atheists oppose any semblance of organized religion, it is in no way, a religion - it just tends to be clumped with other religions, and because it is associated with other religions, it is therefore a religion.

Calling atheism a religion, is like calling abstinence a sex position. That's the best analogy I can come up with.

You could also be agnostic, an option i feel is missing from this poll. They do not believe in any higher power but they do not deny the possible existence of them either. There is a difference.
