    New PC required

So, here it is: my own thread as suggested (mmo-champion.com/threads/1538908-Setup-of-the-month)
... can´t post links because of restrictions :/

    Profile
90% of the time I will use the PC for WoW. Other games are stratetic titles and seldom shooter (but these are old ones). As a software developer I sometimes use the PC for home office and/or addon development so parrallel use of multiple IDEs (VS, Netbeans, Eclipse) and Servers (Apache/IIS/MySql/SQLServer/SharePoint) should be possible without high delays in context switches. PC should be relative quiet and in a blue optic because of my re-used case. Greater HDD are not required because of NAS usage. Selected optical drive (LG CH12NS30 Blu-ray) does not exist on pcpartpicker

    • Budget: Don´t know. I expect >1200€, actual basket has ~1700€ (mindfactory.de/shopping_cart.php/basket_action/load_basket_extern/id/3dced62203bb7a3106f5f6d2409132f6995935d32e160bd3e3d)
    • Resolution: matters?
    • Games / Settings Desired: WoW, SC2, C&C, CIV, D3, LoL, UT
    • Any other intensive software or special things you do (Frequent video encoding, 3D modeling, etc): Software (Web-)Developing (C#, PHP, Java, Lua, "SharePoint")
    • Country: Germany
    • Parts that can be reused: Would reuse actual case (listed below for dimensions)
    • Do you need an OS?: Have Win 8.1 Pro
    • Do you need peripherals (e.g. monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc)?: Monitor (actual Syncmaster 931BW is somewhat small in display height)

    Actual selected parts (pcpartpicker.com/p/gCFhmG)

    CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor (pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646i74790k)

Wow that's some crazy setup there bro I'm not that much into PC building but I'm just wondering if you need such a setup for only those games? I think you can do it with much less, that is ofcourse if you just want to play those games you mentioned! Cheers

woah. i dont know whats bringing the price so high but 2k $ for a 4790k with a GTX 770 seems very high. i recently build and sold a rig with a titan for less. something with these specs for me is kind of a ... i dont know, maybe like 1,2k thing.

i dont think you really need a platinum psu, and 600W will do too. SSDs in RAID... well if you need it go ahead, same with the RAM. 8 Gig would be enough for gaming though. i dont know if coding is that ram intensive?

Budget plays no major role. 1200€ is only what I initially thinked about. If it will be 1800€ - so it is

    - Grafic: didn´t know what to choose because I think I don´t need the best in slot. Selected the GTX770 and there was a suggestion for a minimal power supply of 650W with >42A at 12V. So do you realy think 600W be enough?
    - Ram: At compile time it does not use that much, but the IDEs needs tons of it. My 4 year old work-machine has 16GB. It is comfortable, MS suggest a minimum of 8GB Ram for SharePoint.

    Edit:
Lifetime of my PC is normaly 6-7 years. Only graficcard I rebuy all ~3 years because they die (last 4 do so)

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor (€284.90 @ Caseking)
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Water 3.0 Performer 99.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (€75.89 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (€173.47 @ Amazon Deutschland)
    Memory: GeIL EVO Leggara Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory (€144.90 @ Caseking)
    Storage: Crucial M550 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (€131.89 @ Amazon Deutschland)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 280X 3GB Black Edition Double Dissipation Video Card (€267.90 @ Caseking)
Power Supply: XFX 650W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (€84.69 @ Hardwareversand)
    Monitor: ViewSonic VX2770Smh-LED 27.0" Monitor (€238.33 @ Amazon Deutschland)
    Total: €1401.97
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

There are three placeholder components in there:

    1) the 4770K CPU is the highest one on PCP - change for the 4790k from Caseking, which should cost ~€300;
    2) the M550 SSD should be changed for the MX100 (either the 256GB or 512GB version - 512 has better R/W/X stats, but may be a bit out of the price range);
    3) the UD5H shouild be replaced with the ASUS Z97-A motherboard, though the UD5H is perfectly fine.

It's still over your primary budget of €1200, but those three changes should sort everything for you.

I think I should never wrote the 1200€ - even with the ">" sign it brings more confusion than without the whole number

    tenangrychickens:
    - How much difference is between DD3-2666 and DD3-1866? The latter sounds to be 2/3 performance of the first?
    - The CPU cooler is part of a water cooling system, isn´t it? Haven´t any experience with it and I think I will need a external radiator too?

Just to clear a few things up, the budget to work with is 1200-1700€? The few times i used pcpartpicker Deutschland i couldn't even make a decent build cause it only has like 10-20% of what is available in the market.

For gaming there is no difference between 2666 and 1866 ram. For software development what i do know is that you would pref want less CL and 16GB would be plenty. So its better getting 2x8gb (or maybe 4x4 could be better) 1866Mhz CL9 than getting 2666CL12

hm, lets say max limit is 2000€. The 1700€ came from the parts I postet above in my basket at mindfactory (external-use-url is also included).
I mostly worry about the compatibility ... I remember times where RAM xy does not work in board Z
    Thx for clarify kostattoo

    Solid build.

Sorry if I missed it but why not a single, better performing SSD instead of 2 x 256 GB? MX100 512 GB

I know you said you will re-use your case, but if you change your mind and want a new one since budget permits it, Fractal Design Define R4 ab €82,67 is awesome and quiet.

@Notarget, i don't know really, i assumed he wanted a seperate ssd for his work.

Another thing to consider, which i am not very familiar with. What kind of software develompent is that exactly. Wouldn't that better fit with ECC RAM for errors?

With solid did you mean the original one or the updated from kostattoo?
Two separate SSD for separation of concerns. One software one data. This could be solved with partitions too, but if the hard drive has an error, the cost of restoration is then twice that of two hard drives.
Work source are only temporary on the local PC. It is kept in a VCS and only checked out, modified and re-checked in. If I realy need a separation for business data, than I think it will be a VM. The software are custom solutions, some of them very little, some have ~10m LoC. I think ECC is only required for production, so errors in user data can only occure by the application, not by hardware. But on development? Never had a issue yet and don´t know a szenario where it fits

    I love my case

Can't you just run updates/backup through your NAS?

this was my original intention, but ... the software for backup/restore requires a running windows, so it didn´t help with my crash yesterday - broken by design ? .oO

    Thank you for your sugesstions.
Changed the components a little bit and ordered
