Guy accidentally gets elected to office (super-low office though)

    http://newbrunswicktoday.com/article...ican-committee
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Rutgers University Junior Asad Asif was inaugurated earlier this month as a member of the Middlesex County Republican Committee, a position to which he was unanimously elected with one vote, his own.
Heard them talking about this briefly on TYT, and thought it was hilarious, mostly because it's about 20 minutes from where I live. The position he voted himself into is a very very low position, I believe there's like thousands of them around the state, but could you imagine writing in your name and winning an election?

Have any of you ever written in a name when voting, whether your own name or someone else?

Him getting the seat is not funny in itself, but the funny thing is:
Though Asif is “confident in his abilities to perform his duty as a member of the County Committee,” he doesn’t particularly identify as a Republican or Democrat, nor does he particularly believe in the efficacy of his position. “If I’m going to donate my time, it’ll be to my religion or to an actual charity that helps people,” he said.

Fun fact: That religion is Islam. And according to him, it made his own inauguration difficult: “At the Old Bridge Town Clerk’s office, the employees all gave him ‘dirty looks’ when he requested to be sworn in on a Quran rather than a Bible.” Because of course.

What if no one used anything and just stated the oath?

I'm from Old Bridge (graduated from HS there last year), and that doesn't surprise me at all.

The guy's name was Asad Asif? Nobody used the fact that the name sounds like a gold seller during the campaign? /rimshot

    We've voted animals in before.

Hell, there's a cat that's the mayor of a town in Alaska.

Elections are pretty much a hit or a miss now.

    They do.

You can usually swear an oath using a holy book, or you can affirm an oath using no religious texts.

At least that's what happened when I did jury service.

If I recall, some have sworn on the Constitution.

But can you do it using no text?

All that means is the government doesn't have the right to tell us what ONE religion we have to adhere to, or be imprisoned or worse.

Since the bible isn't particular to one single religion, the use of it isn't forcing you to follow one particular religion.
