    To Ban or Suspend?

Something which really grinds my gears is how most people call a suspension a ban. To me, the act of banning someone is a permanent removal whereas a suspension is a temporarily removal.

If you said something bad on the Warcraft forums which could be offensive, you could get a 72 hour suspension.
If you're caught botting or hacking, your account will be permanently removed.
Luis Saurez is not banned if he is returning in four months.

It's not a matter of semantics, either. If they were to say expelled rather than banned, okay, that's fine but suspension and ban are two entirely different forms of punishment. It's like using latency to talk about low a frame rate in games.

Just me? Am I slowly getting into the age of yelling at kids to get off my lawn?

    Yes. Suspensions are temporary bans.

If you want to specify it as being permanent, you add that.

A suspension also implies you can come around. A ban implies no access.

A ban is a time stop, it can be temporal or permanent so, technically, it is the same.

To whom? In the USA a temporary ban from school is called a suspension. You are either allowed access to the school, but detained in a room all day for a predetermined amount of time (In School Suspension) or you are disallowed access from the school for a predetermined amount of time and any trespassing on school property can lead to further action (Out of School Suspension)
