    First Time PC Build

Hey all, first time PC building here and I was directed to the mmo forums by a veteran roomy of mine. First off I'm sorry I couldn't post links, I just joined so it wouldn't let me. All I did was take out the wwwdots but you should still be able to copy and paste without that part.

Anyway, here’s the basic bones build I’ve compiled based on limited google searches and my incredibly limited knowledge of what does and doesn’t go together.

The Newbish Build in Question: pcpartpicker.com/user/VyelChuChu/saved/wMqhP6

Plus this Hardrive I couldn't find in the list
    WD Velociraptor WD1000DHTZ 1TB 3.5" SATA Hard Drive: amazon.com/dp/B007VPGJIY/?tag=besthdds-20

So my main question would be, is there anything horribly wrong with any of these pieces being together? For example, is my case even big enough, is it too big, or would be a tight fit? Do you guys think my power supply would handle my video card well? Stuff like that. The basic begging for opinions from a first time builder.

    Thanks!

Your power supply is rather large, but it seems like a pretty standard build otherwise. 650w would give you 100w overhead (if you have 3hdd and 4 fans installed) if not 600w would be fine. http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

The Velociraptors are ancient, they're no longer needed in the current market due to SSDs being more affordable.

Any particular reason you're going for a HAF X? They're very overpriced.

I had no idea about the Velociraptors being dated or what not, I think I picked it just after reading some suggestions and one guys' supposed top tier list and price. As far as going lower with the power supply wattage, I did a little bit. But due to a lot of the reviews on the video card I want, people were suggesting to go at least 700W to be safe. So I downgraded to a 750, no module, power supply. I was considering module or semi module but my wallet is demanding otherwise.

    Upgraded Build: pcpartpicker.com/user/VyelChuChu/saved/y2gzK8

Any other suggestions/opinions? Thank you very much you two!

Ya would be much better off with a build like Cheezus's. A 700W is only recommended because of the crappy "700W" firecrackers that are out there whereas the whole system Cheez picked will run about 450-500W at most and a good PSU like the XFX will be plenty. Though you can also get a Rosewill Hive 650W for the same price(after a coupon code) and it comes with a $10 rebate.

Alright I'll do a bit more research and consider the lower power supply, I've just gotten a lot of warnings to not skimp on it.

In order to spark some more conversation, why else would I be better off with Cheezus' build? Assuming you don't just mean the power supply is the only reason I'd be better off with it.

Reasons for the changes I made with Cheezus' build:
Storage ~I'm going with a terabyte hardrive just for luxury's sake. I also do pretty big art pieces digitally and have a lot of reference archives I like keeping on my main pc while I'm working on art. But if anyone has any suggestions for a better terabyte drive let me know.
Solid State Drive ~I will consider getting and SSD drive later on, it's an acceptable cut for me as I don't absolutely need one.
Motherboard ~Oops I actually meant to put Cheezus' there.
Video Card ~I have my heart pretty set on that card, right now the one I chose is on sale for cheaper and as far as I saw the one Cheezus linked was only a very slight downgrade.

A overclockable processor is pretty much mandatory at this budget, as is a SSD and there isn't much reason to not get one as well as a HDD. Also, that Windforce 290 isn't very good and seems to have a pretty high failure-rate according to buyers so you would be better off avoiding it and getting the Asus.

If I'm mostly just playing mmos like Warcraft and Wildstar, the occasional steam game, and using huge files on photoshop do I really need to be worrying about overclocking programs? Why exactly would you say such things are mandatory? (Trying to learn about all this while I'm at it.)

And alright I'll look at the asus again!

For CPU-Bound games, like WoW, overclocking your CPU is a must to get as much performance as you can. At this budget, a SSD is also a essential component to help with load&boot times in pretty much everything you do. Especially when your playing stuff like WoW, where throwing that $100(for the SSD) at the GPU won't give you any better performance as the game is dependent on the CPU.

I admit the SSD is so damn tempting, it'd be so nice to have WoW/Wildstar loading nice 'n fast. I'll keep it in high consideration. Would you know of any SSDs even slightly cheaper than the one he mentioned, but still decent? Also what does and HDD do additionally/differently?

Anyway, I doubt I'm ever going to learn how to overclock my system very good any time soon. I've been told you have to be pretty familiar with overclocking, and how to handle the programs, to make it even worth doing at all. I know a lot of people swear by it but I can't see myself having the time get that proficient. But either way I still want the processor Cheez suggested, that has the ability to be overclocked, so it will be an option for me eventually I guess.
(Also, GPU refers to which piece? *dumb*)

Thanks very much for answering my prompts tiel.

    GPU = Video Card.

You could get the 128GB MX100 for about $30 cheaper, but you would sacrifice 128GB of space for that $30 and that isn't really worth it in my opinion.

And there are some overclocking utilities that you can use(Can't remember the ones mentioned here, but a quick search brought up this from Intel) and someone here should be able to help you with that.

Alright, definitely good points tiel. I think I'll look into overclocking once I actually get all the pieces for the darn thing. I'm going to throw this build to a few more people I know, get some final suggestions and hopefully it'll fall together nicely.

Thank you all, I'm open to more suggestions and opinions if anyone happens upon this thread and feels like it.

The build I listed already has a 1TB HDD, the SSD is for OS/WoW/Cache.

A SSD will be godsend if you work with photoshop often, you won't believe it.

If you're going to play Wildstar then you might want to switch to NVidia, as of now it runs like a sack of potatoes on AMD cards.

You're not going to skimp on it by going with a 550w PSU, if you were skimping then you would get a no-name brand with terrible quality.

Yeah I noticed that awhile back, don't know why I misread earlier.

    Gah, okay I'll cave, I'll cave! <3

Thanks for the tip, I think it explains the seriously crappy performance I'm getting from Wildstar on my current computer despite it being dated. Do you have any nividia cards you particularly like that would be good suggestions?

    Alright, thanks Cheezus.

Edit: On Nividia’s website they suggest three cards for a 550w PS at around a budget of $400 for the card. GeForce GTX 750 Ti, GTX 750, and the GTX 680. But all except the 680 seem rather cheap as I'd be willing to go better if higher price = better in my instance.

For the love of all that is holy take what Nvidia's site says with a grain of salt. Pretty much all of their non-dual GPU cards will run off a good 550W PSU.

I had a daaaamn strong feeling you'd say that. Alright I'll scan through their cards based on my price range. Likely going to be 780 or 770 I think.

For future reference, you can typically look up a review of a card your are thinking about buying on a site like tomshardware or anandtech and they will have a power consumption table for the card towards the end of the review pages(take the GTX 770 as a example).

Thanks Tiel, and yeah it definitely looks as though I'm going to be doing 770. I'd like to bump up to 780 since reddit is saying it'd be the best equivalent to the AMD card Cheezus suggested, but MAN them prices.

This is the cheapest 780 I could find: pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-video-card-gvn780oc3gdrev20

So for now I'm browsing the 770 cards with a 4gb ram filter on, pondering reviews and prices: pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#sort=d5&qq=1&c=137&r=4096

I think I'm gonna settle on this one, looking up some more reviews and I'll try to find it on the websites you suggested tiel.

You can get one a bit cheaper from PNY. You can check a review of it here, which is pretty damn good and performs pretty damn close to a GTX 780.

Why would you get 4GB VRAM when you're not going to pass 2GB? (Assuming you're using a 1920x1080 display)

If they're on the same price, then it likely won't matter.
