    How Much Really Got "Pruned"

Edit: Paladin Moderator Fhi kindly asked if they could quote this in a Class Beta write-up post and I am absolutely fine with that (and a little bit humbled :3) and if any others would like to then that's also awesome. Seems the next wave of patch notes will use a similar format to this so maybe that'll be better for folks.

I’ve separated “ability pruning” into three categories that have emerged predominant:

    1. Removed entirely. (Removed)
    2. Abilities that have been made Spec-specific. (Abilities Consolidated to Spec)
    3. Passive bonus has been merged with the base effect of a spell or a spell was needlessly complicated whilst providing little to no gameplay has been consolidated. (Mechanical Redundancy)

These categorizations help divide the cluttered “pruning” section, improving readability and helping to clarify that many mechanics have not been removed but rather consolidated resulting in less shock at how much has seemingly been “removed”.

Some changes in the “pruning” section did not fit into the 3 categories and so I have moved those to a “Misc.” section and suggest that they be viewed more as actual class changes. I have not included the "PvP Disarmament" section or those changes here as I do not believe anybody is actually upset about THOSE changes beyond concerns of PvP balance and highly, highly niche PvE situations. Feel free to debate that decision, I'm not beyond folding those changes in too. It's just hella' tedious.

I'm sure there are errors. I'm sure there are typos. I'm sure you'll all happily point them out to me. I'll try to edit the corrections in without breaking it more. I think the formatting is consistent now. Hopefully this will better identify what is really happening to your class in one easy to read bite. I've no doubt much is still subject to change and I'll try to keep this up to date when the next wave of notes land later this week.

That's ALOT, but it doesn't make the game worse, i think it's for the best, and now they can slowly build up again.

I think it makes the game a hell of a lot better. This has been a long time coming and it's all the more vital now that we're getting free boosts to high levels (also, a long time coming) but my point is more that a LOT actually hasn't been removed. The majority of that wall of text is just "ability X that was never used ever for any reason is no longer there" or "abilities A B C are now just one ability" etc. The actual number of genuinely "removed" things is probably an average of 3-4 abilities per class.

I'm not sure, I used most/all spells being removed from classes I play.

A lot of CDs got compressed such as Unholy Frenzy. A lot of Utility got taken away and I really disagree with that approach to balance but this was generally made up for by new utility being given to other classes. I guess 1 for all IS better than 3 for some, 0 for others but I think 3 for all is better still. Hopefully we'll reach that point next expansion: "break it down to build it up"-style but maybe not. Personally, I don't mind if all classes follow a template so long as they have unique flare and style and gameplay.

Indeed, I think most of all I'm going to miss the complexity that [Generic Passive] added by increasing all damage [Situational Ability] did. Personally that's all that kept me using the right ability at the right time.

    • Bear Hug no longer automatically activates Bear Form.
Strange... If it has been removed it probably no longer activates more than just bear form.

Good catch. See this is why peer review is important. Bear Hug is gone and so is Improved Bear Hug.

If they're removing abilities then why are they removing passives like Safe Fall (for Rogues)?

I was going to post something snarky about people who think this is a serious case of "dumbing down" but you did that better than I would have.

I assume disc is being completely revamped because it lost everything.

Pretty much. It's been confirmed multiple times over the last nine months or so that Disc is being moved to a "heal first, bubbles are a bonus" type gameplay much like Holy is a "heal first, mass HoTs are a bonus" type. Atonement is being made something you do if healing just isn't that necessary (much like Mistweavers had their hurt-to-heal finally moved into a stance rather than viciously beaten into the ground like they did in 5.1 onward) and they'd be getting their own version of Holy Nova so they can aoe heal in a way that Holy won't have access to.

    Because right above it says
    • Fleet Footed now also reduces falling damage taken.

Consolidating Passives is also important so that relevant information is all in the same place rather than split across Passives. Making it more accessible to new players (particularly ones insta-boosted to 90) so that there are less "DPS Traps". Consolidating damage sources is also a goal to make it easier to tune as well as making where damage sources are coming from more transparent to players.

The thing some people don't seem to notice about the pruning is how some specs that were already pretty boring got even more boring, guardian druids for example. Ofc it doesn't hurt those specs much that had a big selection of stuff to do to begin with.

I think that's a very subjective opinion based on what you consider to be boring. I wouldn't have considered GDruids boring at all, quite the opposite, but then you have to find that classes main "thing" interesting (timing, rage overflow management, positioning, off-healing etc.) and if raw number of mechanics are fun for you then yeah you're probably going to see this as a direct nerf to your fun or class "immersion". But for a lot of people, what you find "fun" is what they find "off-putting" or worse "a strict barrier to entry" so it's really just a compromise.

I think the important thing is to identify what defines a spec's gameplay and play on that further whilst reducing maintenance without removing too much fringe gameplay. I think they probably have made a few missteps but they've shown they're willing to retread based on those grounds so people should speak up about specifics and justify them and they'll either agree or disagree and that's really where the line gets drawn. They've proven quite flexible.

Weird, is it? I thought I got improved Bear Hug when I leveled on beta.

Yeah, just logged into her to check and she has "Enhanced Bear Hug: You are no longer immobilized by using Bear Hug". Of course, I don't see Bear Hug in her spellbook either... weird!

It may not have made it to the MMO-C tweet review yet *shakes fist at Chaud and Boub* but a while back Cele-dizzle said they needed a new Draenor Perk to replace it since they'd decided Guardians didn't need or use it that often.

That is one of the things you need to submit a bug report for. Esc > Help > bug report. Type all that in and click submit. That is the point of us beta testing. Not just to get an early first hand look. (though that is a huge plus )
