Need someone who doesn't make mistakes in math

    DONE! Thanks guys

Hey guys, I'm very nervous right now and I can't figure this out myself without ending up with a different result each time I approach my issue.

I have an electricity bill over 1728,55€ which I have to share with 4 (5 including me) people. Problem is, not everyone has lived the same amount of months in this house.

3 tenants have lived there for 6 months (total period)
1 tenant has lived there for 4 months
1 tenant has lived there for 2 months

I have to split the sum fairly among all tenants. Can someone tell me please how much each person now has to pay?

What I have so far is 432€ for 3 people 288€ for the person living 4 months and 144 for the last one, who only lived two months here. Correct?

Nah, it's the shit you have to pay when your final invoice comes and in case your pre-payments are lower than what you actually used.

    Total time = 1 year = 12months

    Tenant A = 6 months = 1728.55 / 2 = 864.275. If you want to split it 3 ways for them, that's 288.092 each.

    Tenant B = 4 months = 1728.55 / 3 = 576.18

    Tenant B = 2 months = 1728.55 / 6 = 288.092

    Math!

Edit: Looks like I verified Rukentuts' answer.

    Edit 2: Woops, nvm.

Well what's the term of the bill? 3 months, 6 months, 12 months?

You need to determine what %age of time each tenant has been responsible for it and bill them an equal amount. But you need the term of the invoice.

edit: I see you have "total period" there now, ok. So 6 months is the term?

It's not a whole year. The whole period is 6 months, not 12. I said that a little bit subtly in my OP

Yup, everything is correct. The only question now is who is going to pay the 55 cents.

    total of 24 person-months
    1728.55 = 72.02 per person-month

    So

    432.14 for each of the 6-monthers (6 person-months each)=1296.42
    288.08 for the 4-monther
    144.04 for the 2-monther

    Total 1728.54

Play rock-paper-scissors to decide who provides the extra eurocent.

It's weighting the amount of time spent there.

We forgot there are 3 6-mo'ers. Our time period of 12mo wasn't long enough.

Split in to 24 portions and allocate appropriately.

Split the total bill in 4. Each of the 3 Tenants living there for six months pays one part each. Split the last part in 3. The tenant living there for two months pay one of the parts, the tenants living there for 4 months pays two parts.

    6 months: ~432.14
    4 months: ~288.10
    2 months: ~144.05

Your brain doesn't always work the way you would hope to. I managed to calculate it myself but I just wasn't sure if what I have is correct.

We need more information. When you say 3 lived for 6 month, does that me you were only 4 people in the flat at a certain time ? and they pay all of that month ?

    1728,55 / 6 = 288,09 € per month

When 6 people live in the flat each person has to pay 288,09 / 6 = 48.02€ for that month

When 5 people live in the flat each person has to pay 288,09 / 5 = 57,62€ for that month

When 4 people live in the flat each person has to pay 288,09 / 4 = 72,02€ for that month

now u can calculate the amount yourself by summing it up for each person

    1728.55 / 4 = 432.1375 per room.

So the 3 tenants that lived there for 6 months each pay 432.14

    Last room was split, so...

    432.1375 x (2/3) = 288.092

    +

    432.1375 x (1/3) = 144.046

Have had to do a similar thing with Council Tax in a house I lived in. Think about it in terms of "people months" (i.e. 3x6 people months, 1x4 and 1x2, = 24 people months. THen divide the bill by the number of people months and charge each person that amount for each month they lived there.

Wait, was he there 1 month or two? Not that big a deal, but would slightly affect the split.

    1728.55 / 6 months = 288.09/mo.
    4 people - 2 months @ 72.02 per person/month = A
    5 people - 2 months @ 57.62 per person/month = B
    6 people - 2 months @ 48.02 per person/month = C

    6 Monthers x4
    2A + 2B + 2C = 355.32 each

    4 Monther x1
    2B + 2C = 211.28

    2 Monther x1
    2C = 96.04

    1728.60 total

    uuh... what now?

edit: I see your edit. The house never had more than 4 tenants at a time.

    uuh... what now?
That's how much each person owes you for the bill, based on how long they've been there and the adjusted monthly responsibility for that person.

If they've been there 6 months, they owe 355.32 each.
If they've been there 4 months, they owe 211.28.
    2 months, 96.04.

Since with more room mates the amount for an equal share is reduced. There's 6 of you there, since you said 5 + yourself. Just divide it up into 2 month chunks and divide it by however many people were there at the time.
