Migrating to USA as a russian

    Hello everyone.

Well as the topic suggests, I'm a russian and I wanna move to USA, most likely to Pennsylvania state (not sure yet where to exactly). How friendly is USA to russian immigrants if they are not, well, ignorant and rude? Also, is it possible to make for a living in USA if I don't really have any friends there?

I'm planning to move with my wife probably in ~3-5 years, when we have some money saved up.

Yeah, I know there are plenty topics like this out there in Google, but I thought I'd ask here since I'm mostly communicating with, well, "outer world" via WoW.

Americans are awesome. You'll be fine if you will act with respect to foreign culture.

You should read up on what state has the highest job growth and opportunity and decide from there. For the most part we are usually friendly to foreigners, but experiences may vary.

Ive lived in the US now for 35 years, also originally from Russia. I have never felt unwelcomed anywhere - but then again I'm in Philadelphia PA and this might as well be called 'little russia'. If you stick to coming to this area - it'll feel like you never left Russia at all, meaning seeing and speaking to other Russians.

What kind of job are you going to be looking for? If it is unskilled labour, minimum wage type jobs I would move somewhere with a decent minimum wage and not to the US

No chance he'd even get in if it was that. The US is practically the hardest country to legally move to.

Not sure how true that is, but it would be pretty fucking ironic seeing as how bad our illegal immigration problems are in the south.

There is basically no way to move there unless you find an employer willing to go through a process of sponsoring you and helping you through the whole immigration process.
The other options are close relatives, a lottery or investing a few million $ into an US based business.

When you move to america you automatically become american.

America loves russian immigrants, something about with winning the cold war...

Also sluts love guys with accents and you don't get more manly than russian. Use that to your advantage, lie if you have to.

Female? Guys love girls with accents, especially russian accents.

    Americans love russian accents.

If you’re immigrating legally, 90%+ of people won't have a problem that your an immigrant. Can you speak English on a functional level? Are you skilled or unskilled labor? Finding a job might be difficult if you are unskilled labor, and that would be my primary concern.

There's a big chance that you won't get H-1B visa Employer can apply for this one only once a year and there's a quota of 55k/year T_T Damn.

As a russian software engineer, I'd say that my migration to China few years ago was a joke, I found an employer, got a contract, went through few medical checkups, applied for and got my visa within 7 days period, lol.

Right now I'm willing to move to USA, but that's quite a long process, can take up to one year just to do visa related stuff, gosh..

It's not like it was in the old days when Russia was our mortal enemy. I don't think most people would care. Most Americans are use to the fact their neighbors and coworkers are from different parts of the world. Hell, I work with an Argentine (who looks like a Russian strangely enough), three Somalis, a guy from Togo and a Latino.

One of my co-workers is white and he jokes that on Sundays, he's the only white guy there.

Sure, we've got assholes who'll probably hate you for being Russian, but they're not a majority and I think that sort of stuff is dying out. Overall I don't think it'll be a problem.

As long as you speak some English, which you clearly do, you should be fine.

Here is some information just to use as a reference:

http://livingwage.mit.edu/ - Living Wage and Minimum Wages by state

    http://www.bls.gov/ooh/
    http://www.bls.gov/ooh/a-z-index.htm
    http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oessrcst.htm -Bureau of Labor Statistics

If I was you I would do more research on it though. Some of the information is outdated.

EDIT: My father is a first generation indian immigrant who came here 35-40 years ago. He has always made friends wherever he goes. When he first came here, my mother (who is Italian/Irish) said that he had a very heavy accent and he still has an accent (though not as heavy) today. From my experience as a former military brat if I was immigrating here I would personally try to find a home near a military base because military people have met many people from different origins, but no matter where you live no one is really going to care about your nationality (particularly if you came here legally). And if they do, shame on them.

I enjoy foreigners in the United States. It really helps to make it the melting pot that it is. It's a great place! I hope you find where you want to go, and if it's Pennsylvania, good luck! I'm sure you'll be fine anywhere.
