Swedish dad takes gamer kids to warzone

    http://www.thelocal.se/20140808/swed...ds-to-war-zone

(Just some snips from the article)
A Swedish father has come under fire for taking his two sons on a trip to Israel, the West Bank and occupied Syria in order to teach them the reality of war.
Helgegren said that he is "proud" of the family's trip and that he didn't understand the psychology of parents who wanted to "protect" their children from seeing real war but let them play war-like video games.
What do people think of this? Is it actually a problem to let your kids play "war-like video games" whilst protecting them from gruesome footage from actual war? In my opinion it's pretty irresponsible to bring your kids to a region that is in a military conflict.

There are a lot less harsher ways to get the point across.

Woah, an actual father. Many gratz to him, and I hope he keeps going that way.

In what way is he an "actual father" for taking his kids to regions which are in a military conflict as opposed to those who do not take their kids to such places?

That's actually pretty badass. Some kids are Faaaaaaar too soft and way too sensitive about everything because they have been sheltered. Some kids play too many war games and talk too much shit without knowing too much about how the rest of the world is doing.

I don't think it's harsh in any way. I doubt he exposed them to any form of real danger. And as the article describes

"I think people didn't read thoroughly, so they thought we were just there recently, when there is a massive war going on," he said. "I also think that many people who posted these dreadful comments just believe that the Middle East is a total war zone at all times."
Kudos to him, it's not something easy to pull off. That's a real parent, right there.

Good parenting. Kids need to understand the reality of what is going on in this world. They are the future leaders. I don't know the circumstances, but if his kids were anything like my spoiled nieces, I think it's healthy to expose them to the real world. It can spark humility, compassion, and focus.

To me, that's worth the risk. But again, it depends on the kids. Its hard to teach kids such values when they are bombarded with distraction after distraction from every damn angle in the world. Sometimes something this drastic might be necessary.

How likely is it for them to be harmed by this?

On one side, I see his point. Trying to penetrate the detached and desensitized mindset that younger generations face from high amounts of media exposure. And trying to make them understand the gravity that something like war has on people's lives.

On the other hand, probably not the smartest way to teach your kids a lesson. If it taught them anything at all to begin with.

Significantly more likely than if they had stayed at home and been given a lecture instead of being taken to an actual war zone.

    There could be many points:

    - He does not allow his children to live in the swedish capitalist dream by alerting them about what is actually going in the world.
    - He cares enough for them to teach them himself.
    - He trusts his children enough to bring them in a war zone.

    For instance.

Also, I don't see why taking them to a zone like that would have his title of father striped from him.

Idiot parents don't understand that video games aren't real. News at 11.

Is he going to take them to a prostitute when he catches them watching porn, too?

I think its ridiculous for a parent to purposely bring their kids into a war zone. Its a stupid game he is playing, its not like Sweden fights in wars anyways.

Hopefully a good realitycheck for the kids without being traumatizing

Why not? If his children are 18+ and ask him for it, it would be perfectly fine.

Jesus fucking Christ people, read the article. He didn't go there while there's an actual war. He visited Israel before the invasion on Gaza begun.
