Girl leaves contacts in for six months, amoeba's ate her eyes

First of all, all the nopes in the entire entire world. I can't use contacts, I have a crazy aversion to anything getting close to my eyes. I realize that this is a weird case, because she did not take them out/clean them for so long..but damn. Apparently the same kind of infection can happen if you do not properly disinfect them between uses?

    http://www.medicaldaily.com/contact-...-them-6-months

Technically, the amoeba's ate bacteria on her eye, then burrowed inside, not actually eating her eye.

"The director of ophthalmology at Taipei's Wan Fang Hospital, Wu Jian-Liang said, “Contact lens wearers are a high-risk group that can easily be exposed to eye diseases. A shortage of oxygen can destroy the surface of the epithelial tissue, creating tiny wounds into which the bacteria can easily infect, spreading to the rest of the eye and providing a perfect breeding ground. "

Yeah, no thanks. Also, from that article, the US has such a high percentage of contact lens users, are glasses just more common in other countries?
    You're a towel.

The US also has a higher number of people who use teeth whitening procedures.

Not to generalise, as everyone is different, but from an outsider's perspective a lot of US culture includes appearance. I would assume people prefer contacts to glasses just because they think glasses don't look as good as contacts.

Even though this is far from the norm I can't stand the idea of wearing contact lenses. They just really creep me out as I loathe anything touching my eye directly.

I wear contacts because glasses under a motorcycle helmet is a terrible experience. I'm sure there's many more reasons instead of 'looks'.

OT: It's her own fault, when I got my lenses it was hammered into me this exact sort of thing could happen. So I use distilled water and boil it every time I clean my lenses and always use disinfected wash on my hands. It's the same as never washing your hands and complaining you got sick. Although this is an extreme example and I do feel sorry for her.

Then she's a fool and deserves it.
I wear contacts, have for 3 years.
First thing taught to me was that if I don't take them out and clean them daily, that bacteria can form in them and make you blind.

She's a rare case that happened after 6 months. Water can also be toxic for your body and it can kill you in less than a day.

These examples are a good teaching lesson for anybody not washing their contacts properly but there are eye viruses and parasites that work way faster than 6 month amoeba development which you can get just by touching the infected person,...

After struggling to even get one contact lens into my eye, I reached over for the glasses and put them on without any trouble. Never tried contacts again.

Contacts are often pushed quite hard by the optician-y people, too, because like... if you buy a cheap pair of glasses and your prescription doesn't change, it doesn't make them much money, whereas if you keep buying contacts for years and years they'll make a killing off you

But then the eye-glasses industry would go out of business...

I'm just going to save up for laser eye surgery. I'm not too thrilled about having a laser shot into my eye (as much as I think it'd be pretty cool to tell people about afterwards) but glasses are just much more comfortable and easy to use.

I dunno, I've heard of certain types of contacts that are meant to help coerce your eyes toward working better, though I think those are quite expensive. They work better than glasses, theoretically, because they are sort of a treatment, not just a work-around like glasses usually are.

Also, my post wasn't meant to be "all US people are obsessed with looks", I just meant that it comes across to me that a lot (not all, probably not even the majority, but a lot) of people in the US care more about how others see them than people in other countries- but I appreciate that generalising never indicates the truth.

Stupid people and not being aware of the limits of them. I have contacts that I use from time to time when I'm going out and don't want to wear glasses and I've never had a problem. Wear glasses if I'm just going to be at home or otherwise not going out to do anything where there's lots of people.

This had to have been painful or at least irritating in some way. You would think you would take out your contacts before your eyes became swiss cheese.

Unfortunately, that's not far from the truth.

I, however, find women with glasses to be cute...in an adorkable kind of way. Geek chicks are the best.

Water toxicity can kill you in under 3 mins, depending on how long you can hold your breath of course

OT, Her own fault. I had a cosmetic "cats eyes" pair that I used to wear in night clubs that would freak people out. The thing that was drilled into me was that they had to be removed, and they had to be cleaned in propper solution daily or there would be complications.

I wear contacts on and off sometimes, but this is indeed her own fault, unless she had not been informed properly about contacts by a doctor. When you first wear contacts it is indeed hammered into you how careful you need to be with proper hygiene etc. And i don't understand how the contacts hadn't started to get irritating after a few weeks.

Wow, that's gross. I've heard a few contact lens horror stories. My godmother would spit in her contact lenses and put them in (/shudder), a coworker's son stopped using them because he kept getting eye infections, and I've known two people that forgot they already had a pair in and shoved another pair in their eye.

I've worn contacts for two years and had zero issues outside of dry/allergy eye irritation. I prefer wearing them to glasses but contacts are expensive. Especially when I have a perfectly good pair of glasses I could use instead :/
