GamerGate hasn't been a thing for over a year now, was surprised to see this thread pop back up.

There are still groups active. Mostly those pushing back against the censorship in the name of localization stuff and the ever present over reach of the ESRB as moral watch dogs. There's also the various "import/export limitation" circumvention groups. Most really active stuff has gone private from what I can see.

If you believe Grayson then they weren't friends at the time. He contributed feedback as part of the game's beta process years before they developed a relationship. The story is that their relationship progressed in the opposite direction - Grayson became interested in the person behind Depression Quest and approached her personally years down the line after having played an early build of her game. Of course, you don't believe Grayson, I'm assuming.

There are more than enough tweets exchanged between the two to suggest they were spending time together and even playing online games together prior to any articles. Then in 2014 (you know, years down the line) there's that article about the game jam that didn't disclose their relationship despite the fact she was planning a group vacation to Vegas that included him before it was published.

At no point in their relationship did he disclose it until he was called on it. And it's not like she is the only one Grayson is accused of covering without disclosing a relationship.

Many articles about the greenlight list single out Depression Quest, including Forbes, VG247, Endgadget, PC Gamer, Eurogamer etc. This was the height of the indie nongame movement, a few months after the release of Gone Home, when games journalism was looking for arty, serious fare to highlight. Nothing Grayson wrote was disproportionate to the media coverage at the time from any other outlet, most of which wrote in far more detail about the game in question.

And this is beside the point since none of the other authors are alleged to having any relationship with her at all so they were not required to disclose such. Professional impropriety does not require a "disproportionate" amount of coverage.

There has been a trend of every other month one of the most outspoken anti gamergate people turning out to be a rapist or pedophile or some form of sexual abuser. Proving the old theory right that the people crying the loudest are the ones committing the worst crimes to deflect attention. However this has been increasing in both severity of crimes and occurrence and this week EVERY SINGLE DAY has had another of the "them gabergoobers hate women and want to harass everyone" soyboys being revealed to be an actual rapist or child molester or pedophile with terabytes of childporn on their computers during police raids. Including editors from sites like Polygon and prominent "anti harassment" socjus networking "mutuals"

One per day. Every. Day. This. Week. Drink that in. These self appointed paragons of justice and social witchfinding have had one of their core leaders turn out to be a monster every single day and its still going on.

The worst part? They still think they are in the right but claim "hebephiliacs are the new blacks who its okay to shit on by cishet bigots". These monsters who spent the last 4 years spreading jack thomsponesque moral panic over gamers and telling everyone to judge each other based on gender and skin colour and turned multiculturalism into 'appropriation' and segregation into 'safe spaces' are revealed to jerk off to or actually fuck children and they think they are still the victim. Some even claiming they are a self identified "child soul, which means inside they are a child and as such will only be sexually attracted to children and need understanding not hate".

This is beyond the goddamn pale now. All those years of selling sob stories of being harassed by boogeymen and not only have many turned out to be lairs, cheats and fraudsters but more every day are turning out to be the worst kind of scum our species can produce.

I'm so confused. If it is too complicated to say what is being discussed, how do you know what is being discussed? I'm asking here because it's one of the largest threads on the internets about it, this is my attempt to understand the sides as they have become today.


Like, if this "movement" wants people to understand things or motivate change and their best pitch when people ask what they are about is "go dig up facts, the truth is ambiguous and everyone is a liar" it just sounds like a bunch of conspiracy theorists ranting about literally nothing. I am so, so thoroughly confused now.

There's not much to be confused by. Cultural reactionaries on the right wanted to push back the growing progressivism in gaming, with Anita Sarkeesian being the center of their ire leading up to the "official" Gamergate movement. Since the right considers progressives immoral (gonna "rot in hell", so to speak), they seized upon the Zoe Quinn/Nathan Grayson situation as self-proof of their righteousness with the immoral left needing to be destroyed at best, marginalized at worst.

Or in other words, the "real gamers" in their eyes needed to push out the "fake gamers", by which is meant anyone who plays games and has progressive views.

This is an extension of the culture war - ala Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Richard Spencer etc. brought into gaming for the first time.

That's fair. Moving from dismissing these people as bloggers and unpaid mods to calling them leaders of a movement isn't really justified. It does explain why these particular people found it easy to believe that GG was full of closet abusers though; after all. that's how they've peopled their own lives.

For the brief period I could view the site after the bomb dropped (I have no idea at what point the site went down) you saw some olympic level hair splitting and goal post moving for the bastion of listen and believe to cast doubt on the claims.
