Nothing makes me smile more in a grocery store than a well stocked Beer/Wine section. Not a HUGE drinker, but I smile the most there.

For those of you in the NE part of the USA, if you have a Wegman's, and haven't tried it, you should really go there. It's like nirvana for foodies.

Big bakery... check
Fresh made sushi... check
huge deli..... check
a whole international aisle... check
about 200 varieties of micro beers.... check
Meats, including alligator and bison, check........ and they special order what they don't have
Huge seafood section.... check
about 60 kinds of loose tea..... check
tons of fresh coffees.... check
GIGANTIC fresh hot food section..... check
Built in pizza store.... check
Built in burrito section.... check
coffee bar.... check
sandwiches made to order.... check
a pub that serves beer and hot foods.... check

Plus about 150 seats with free WIFI.

Don't know. After a while you have a bunch of stuff from which you know that it's "safe", and also are used to skim through ingredient lists.
I don't find it too problematic/annoying (anymore).

Hit up your local farmer's market. That's where I go for all my produce when possible. I also go there for meat, though I imagine that's not something you'd be interested in
