Hey Star Trek fans: What do you hate most about Star Trek?

This may sound like an odd thing to ask. I myself like most incarnations of Star Trek, but there are certain "Star Trek-isms" that occasionally annoy me. A lot of them come from my experiences in an actual navy onboard a submarine. Not the same thing, so I can't say the Trek-isms are "incorrect" or "wrong" but they do annoy me.

The first one that always bugs me is officers reminiscing about their days at the Academy. You can tell these lines weren't written by anyone who actually attended Annapolis or West Point. Chakotay and Janeway walking down a passageway sharing Academy stories relevant to the plot of the episode they are in. "I remember so-and-so, my instructor in warp mechanics at the Academy..." They look back fondly as though Starfleet Academy is a civilian college where fun is had rather than the kind of grueling, disciplined place of academic hardship that an officer academy is. Naval officers do NOT reminisce about their days as cadets. They do, however, reminisce about previous commands they've worked at.

    Anybody else?

It seems you are forgetting that Star Trek is "not" the military, but rather they are explorers.

The fact that their tactical Officers would get their arse handed to them by the average airsofter, they have atrocious tactics.

Yup, this. Yes, they are receiving military training, but that is only a part of their academy education.

You also seem to be forgetting that I specifically said "not the same thing" and that I can't say it's "wrong," only that it annoys me.

You may also be forgetting Deep Space Nine.

The lack of non-humanoid species on the regular.

Yes I know it's a budget thing, and it's easier to dress someone up in a full face mask and bodysuit, but, cmon man, I want to see some god damn hexapods.

This is on my list as well. Worf didn't actually start kicking any butt until he left the Enterprise and went to Deep Space Nine.

Another thing that annoys me is the lack of Enlisted men, considering they make up the bulk of the crew you do not see much of them, instead they will send their bridge Officers and chief Medical Officer for every mundane task.

Yeah, this one didn't bother me as much because I understand the necessity of a cast's size... but we did get Chief O'Brien and Yeoman Rand, at least. But I see what you're saying.

What I hate most are the last few episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise featuring Ryker and letting a few characters die like Trip Tucker.
Well okay, the last episodes of Voyager were pretty bad as well.
Haven't seen the last movie, the first one with younger Captain Kirk was so not Star Trek...

That the current theme for the past two decades has changed from "To boldly go where no man has gone before" to "To boldly stumble backwards and retell stories that have come before"

I'm not a trekkie, but this.

Star Wars's cantina scene had so much diversity, but every Star Trek alien was a deformed human.

They're most closely similar to an expeditionary force. Exploration is part of their mandate, but they're also the military arm of the Federation, and you can't ignore that.

    My issues with Trek, in general;

Techbabble. Trek is soft science fiction. Like Doctor Who. All the techbabble nonsense is distracting and breaks immersion for anyone who has a basic grasp of some of the words they use. And TNG was particularly bad at firing tachyon pulses at things through their deflector array as a cure-all for "weird shit". If it were so useful, you'd think it would just be a standard setting. If you're soft sci-fi, focusing more on people stories, then don't get into the tech at all. If you want to be hard sci-fi and be about the tech, then get it right. At least plausibly so. DS9 was better about this, somewhat, but TNG and Voyager were godawful. The techbabble in, say, Farscape, or Stargate is both more consistent and more accurate, so this isn't exactly insurmountable.

Single-characteristic planets. Planets tend to have one "thing". Jungle planet, desert planet, ice planet, etc. If it's inhabited, the entire culture is a single monolithic culture shared by all, unless there's a civil war or resistance, in which case there are two. Real planets and cultures have massive amounts of variation within them.

The Prime Directive is both incredibly stupid, and the Trek writers know this. That's why every time the Prime Directive comes up, the Captain ignores it and does what's right. Because the Prime Directive is stupid and makes no sense. Particularly as a prime directive. A general policy of non-interference with exceptions for extenuating circumstances, sure, but not as the central pillar of your entire ethic. So stupid even the writers know it's stupid and take the piss out of it every time it comes up, if they don't just flat-out ignore it.

You can't compare a major hollywood 2 hour budget (even back then before it was popular) to the budget of a TV series with several hours of episodes to fill. Particularly when these aliens need to have speaking roles.

I agree the finale for ENT sucked. Berman and Bragga took that job away from Manny Coto and managed to create a slap-in-the-face to the show. Seasons 3 & 4 (the Coto seasons) were outstanding, though. I also think Star Trek should move forward rather than backward, but I honestly don't see any new shows or movies continuing after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis for the foreseeable future.

Nope, he was a Transporter Chief. Enlisted. He wore those pips because they hadn't come up with enlisted insignia yet.

Thats a cop out, he wore the same insignia as the Bridge Officers so in my eyes that makes him an Officer.

Edit: Riker called him a Lieutenant once too, this may add to the confusion.

Wesley Crusher.... He really is an idiot, fucks everything up, is able, to solve the problems, the seasoned officers can not solve, and gets promoted.
