CDC reports record number of measles cases, unvaccinated people to blame

    http://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/20...9-measles.html

“The current increase in measles cases is being driven by unvaccinated people, primarily U.S. residents, who got measles in other countries, brought the virus back to the United States and spread to others in communities where many people are not vaccinated,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, assistant surgeon general and director of CDC’s National Center for Immunizations and Respiratory Diseases. “Many of the clusters in the U.S. began following travel to the Philippines where a large outbreak has been occurring since October 2013.”
The CDC is also saying that the number of children who have been cleared to not be vaccinated and still attend school has surpassed 8%. They believe that mark is when school environments lose herd immunity, and those with compromised immune systems become vulnerable.

That would be fine and dandy if it was only themselves they were hurting. As it is, once we begin losing herd immunity these diseases become serious health concerns for those who cannot receive the vaccination for some reason or another, or those with compromised immune systems (those undergoing radio-chemotherapy treatment for cancer, for instance).

    Quote for the article:

Among the U.S. residents who were not vaccinated, 85 percent were religious, philosophical or personal reasons.
Makes my brain hurt. I imagine personal reasons doesn't include other health issues preventing vaccination? That remaining 15% sounds reasonable for things pertaining to being ineligible for vaccination.

I wish that the parents were the people getting sick and not the children. It sucks that the children involved in this story are suffering for their parents beliefs. Should just make vaccines legally mandatory imho.

The article says that only 90% of the cases were in people who were not vaccinated/unknown status. Not all vaccines are complete immunity, that's the problem with all this anti-vax bullshit - those who can't have it, get ill, and those who do have it are at an elevated (albeit still very low) risk for certain disease.

I absolutely loathe anti vaxxers. They base their opinion more often than not on false, quack science. I dont think philosophical or personal preferences should qualify for a waiver, and Im borderline on the religious excuse.

WHat School districts should do is mandate "If you dont get these vaccines your child cannot attend our school unless the child just outright cannot get it because health reasons" . While I realize this clashes with a right to education in public schools, I think keeping the majority of children safe is much more important than individual right to education. If anti vaxxers are mad on that, they can just set up their own stupid private schools.

In the meantime, autism rates have risen 30% in the past year. Due to the medical conspiracy attempting to fight it, the removal of dangerous vaccines is not happening fast enough, and things like the mmr and dpt vaccines still represent a distinct threat to public health.

In case you don't know me at all, that was 100% sarcasm.

See I don't know if this is predominantly a more American issue or just not one in the part of society I grew up in. Everyone had their vaccines, no exceptions. As far as I know all of my friends even today do. Was one guy who his mum wouldn't let him have the MMR vaccine because of fears but once she found out how surprised everyone was she looked into it and got all 3 done separately instead, so she didn't quite give in but you know what that's close enough, he had them.

The most effective way to get people to vaccinate is to show them videos like this baby with whooping cough

Started over in the UK, with "Dr." Andrew Wakefield. Caught on over here due to airhead celebs like Jenny McCarthy taking up the banner.
    Drives me nuts.
It really hurts my head that people will listen to a celebrity with no medical experience over doctors.

I was about to declare you a fucking idiot, but then I saw you were a mod and gave it a second attempt to read it all to find out whether you were joking...bravo, you almost had me infracted! :P

Stuff like this makes me seriously sad - almost enough to wish that the parents would be legally reprimanded for the deaths of vaccinated children based on their decision (assuming their children COULD be safely vaccinated) to not vaccinate their child.

This whole anti-vac thing is solely due to the fact that the younger generations haven't had to ever deal with crippling widespread disease like polio. It's bullshit.

And frankly any parent who does the whole autism bit.... well A.) it means they're intentionally trying to find excuses, and B.) shows me that they'd rather not be inconvenienced by a child having autism opposed to their child potentially (highly) dying at a young age (and suffering greatly) from a debilitating disease that could have been prevented.

Oh yeah I know the story about Wakefield and all that, hell it was even mentioned in my lectures last year. For the most part people bully each other into getting vaccines though, I hear way more stories about "vaccines are evillll!" from the states than I do this side of the pond. People seem to have mostly got over it and realised that there is no evidence of vaccines -> autism.

It surprises me it isn't illegal and punishable by jail-time to spread false information when it comes to health-care, theres just way too many stupid people out there to believe 1 idiot who is a known figure. There is no point in spreading awareness, you have to take down the people who advice other people stop vaccinating rather then to hang some stupid posters.

Its pretty much just anti intellectualism and anti government and being "independant" crap that causes that, which the U.S has in spades.

Isn't that the whole... 'libertarian' mindset, though? Freedom from whatever-the-hell so long as it doesn't hurt other people? This shit hurts other people. A lot of people (unnecessarily).

1 celeb is enough to negate years of work of saving children...so sad.
