    Going to Scotland...

Next week I'm going to Glasgow. It's for work, and I'll be working most days, but I'll have the evenings off, and I may even get a weekend. Any advice from locals on great pubs/restaurants/other things to do around Glasgow? I may head over to Edinburgh on the weekend for a day trip if I get the time. I've been to both cities before, but local knowledge is always awesome.

    Any suggestions?

Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes

All souls bound just contrarywise, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Good call. I think the weather says it rains a lot in late September in Scotland. Last time I was there, it didn't rain at all.

There's a great billiards & pool pub called Reardon's right at the centre. Really not familiar with the restaurants (besides McDonald's and Pizza Hut), because my diet during my stay there was mostly liquid.

Been a while since I've been to either, Glasgow was rather unremarkable though. But Edinburgh is neat, take a trip to the castle if you can.

I liked Glasgow. Felt nice and urban to me, with wide streets, pretty clean and well maintained. The traffic cones on the statues were a nice touch. I wandered around there until 4 AM on a Saturday night the evening I left so that I wouldn't have to get a hotel room. It was lovely.

I've been to Edinburgh castle, which was pretty cool, but I actually liked the cemeteries more.

I haven't been to this particular place myself, but have friends who have and loved it, if cemeteries are your thing, The Necropolis. http://www.glasgownecropolis.org/

Some beautiful Rennie Mackintosh designed stuff.

At the moment the weather is gorgeous up here, and supposedly to stay like this for a while. enjoy your visit!

Admittedly it has been a long time since I was up there. Like early 90s lol.

Go to "The Pot Still" in Glasgow, especially if you like Whisky, it's a pub specialising in them and they therefore have loads to chose from. If I remember right, it is on Hope St. "The Ubiquitous Chip" is a great restaurant on Byers Rd which is also very close to Ashton Lane where loads of other good pubs and restaurants are. Avoid "The Garage" Nightclub (if it is still even open)

Edit: There is the restaurant "No. 16", also on Byres road.

Go to the Bier Halle on Gordon Street. Good selection of beers, and their pizzas are immense. Usually 2 for 1 as well.

There lots of good restaurants and bars out in Finnieston which isn't too far from the city centre.

    Ha. I second that!

I've lived in Edinburgh all my life, yet i'm horrible at answering this sort of question. The Museum of Scotland, Chambers Street - http://www.nms.ac.uk/national-museum-of-scotland/ is worth a visit if that's your sort of thing. Mixed bag of technological, anthropological and natural history stuff. Free too. If you were staying in Edinburgh till late I'd suggest The Jazz Bar (http://www.thejazzbar.co.uk), also on Chambers Street, excellent live music every night.

Other than that, if it's a nice day I'd honestly just suggest heading to the city centre/old town and wandering. You're bound to find something interesting. Ignore all the tacky tourist shops though. If there's anything more specific you're interested in I could probably point you in the right direction at least.

P.S. It rains a lot in Scotland full stop. We've just had one of the sunniest summers I can remember, but over that last few weeks it's been pretty temperamental. Long story short, even if it looks nice outside, take a rain jacket just in case.

My first trip to Glasgow, I was wandering around downtown around the time the bars let out. I didn't see any problems. Hell, I witnessed more problems in Edinburgh at that time frame. As I was walking back to my hostel along the Royal Mile, there was some dude who shoved another dude into a wall. The dude who hit the wall (hard) turned around, whipped his dick out, and started waggling it at the other guy while walking towards him, then slugged him in the face. Then he put his dick away, they laughed, and walked off together. It was a hell of a welcome to Scotland.

I pretty much hate any alcohol that has touched oak, so whiskey/scotch is out. I love a good cider though. I quite enjoyed Thistly Cross last time I was there, first time I'd ever had a non-gaseous cider. I'll keep an eye out for The Ubiquitous Chip, though, great name.

I understand Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in Glasgow. I'm a big fan, any recommendations on that score?

I've actually been there (The Jazz Bar), and I loved it. Left my cell phone there too, and someone was kind enough to put it in the lost and found for me.

I must have been lucky last time. I'll bring something. Don't have much in the way of good jackets right now though. I may have to go shopping this week.

Awesome. I don't know where Central is, but unless something has changed, I'm liable to be staying over at Albion and Trongate (Argyle).
