So "useless" isn't the best word choice.

The mods don't like it when you create threads that do not serve to create discussion. "Hi I'm new here I heard it was neat" isn't a post that really has anything to discuss.

What you could have done is something like "Hi, I'm new here, just out of curiosity what have some of the best topics of discussion in the past year been?"

Or something like that.

One is cause for discussion the other is not. That's the difference. Hope that helps!
