    Are Superweapons real?

I had just finished a thread on a "zombie virus" and while I didn't think zombies had been created yet, the possibility of a Supervirus, is real, scary, and really really scary. I won't link pics, because it is positively disturbing. So my brain continued down a path of "do we have this? is this possible?" So since MMOC posters hail from all over, and have multiple genius lvl intellects here...I thought I'd ask. Do you think-or know-that we have them? Or not? If I didnt say it, sorry. Please dont just vote, say why.

ok, so if none of these are your choice-or you want to extrapolate-go ahead. tell me whats resonable, or whats out there I havent considered

Yes, they would be nuclear bombs.

hehehe.... if you have to ask you don't have the clearance to know.... Granted Supervirus' are pretty well known to be developed by the CDC and some British lab i forget the name.

Considering the last time they were used is 1945, I'd suggest we've probably made some serious advancement since then. Even if it wasn't world ending in terms of blowing the planet in half, I'm sure we're long since past the point of nukes that are capable of making the place completely uninhabitable.

As for everything else, I'm sure we've got that too. The CDC has plans for what to do if there's a weaponized smallpox outbreak. There's no reason to assume they just picked one virus and ran with it. Most likely, we've got that sitting somewhere too.

It also depends on the definition of world ending. If we are talking about wiping out the human race, then yes nukes would do the trick. But if we are talking about world ending as in blowing the planet into pieces then no, we are nowhere close to that.

Almost all of this is available to a government of sufficient funding if they're feeling genocidal / suicidal.

The world would absolutely end if a couple nukes fell on LA, NY, SF. It would be bad news for everyone everywhere, and that's just talking about the Nuke's effects, ignoring the world's economy, ignoring the war that would follow, the refugees, the centuries of radioactive after effects etc.

About Super Weapons though, I'm sure there's potential, but I think of them in the context of the apocalypse, and in a different way.

If there was some sort of EMP or some kind of cosmic event that just means that we had no electricity, billions would die. If one day water levels just rise over the course of a few years, there are millions that would be SOL. Things like a country going haywire and just bombing the shit out of anyone anywhere, things like Ebola and how easily it's able to spread when it's seemingly quarantined (lol), things like ISIS right now even, for those people that are being persecuted and eradicated by them, the end is upon them. That's their end of the world right there. People in New Orleans that failed to rebuild, failed to move on after Katrina, that's their end of the world.

I don't think it's so far fetched anymore to think that something big could happen and just ruin life for us. Suddenly, the Internet is gone. Think of the years 2010-2014 and all the shit we would've missed out on if we had no internet, all the government corruption, all the awareness of big, dangerous events happening ion other countries...we're so dependent on it as a society, as a race now, we'd be in big trouble if it just disappeared.

Honestly though I don't like to think about it, 'cause so many games and stories revolve around ideas such as these. Let me get lost in those fictional worlds while they're still fictional, while they're still foreign to our reality.

Sound waves set to a certain frequency can crack molecular structure. Its the only weapon that is truly Hulk-busting

How would this ever be more threatening than a nuclear bomb?

The biggest one in history was made by the russians in the 40s and it was something like 50 megaton. A couple of those dropped on big population centres could be world-ending in the extinction of the human race kinda way.

Once they seen the effects of this one, nobody dared make a bigger one. At least not in public knowledge.

The bomb was to big, it wasted most of its energy upwards. It also weighed 60,000 lbs, not very useful. The largest warheads actually deployed by the US or Russia were 25mt.

After roughly 50 megatons the explosion starts getting so big that it's no longer completely contained within the earth's atmosphere making it so that adding additional energy to the device becomes increasingly less effective.

After about 1 megaton though the device gets so big that it's impractical in any tactical scenario.

I read somewhere that there is no limit for how big you can build it. You can basically keep adding stages (you detonate a fission bomb of compressed plutonium, then add hydrogen which will start fusionprocess at about 100 million degrees, the fusion release a storm of neutrons which triggers a third stage of uranium and so on.)
The biggest airplane today - a Antonov 225 could in theory deliver a 1.3 giga ton bomb, more than 25 times bigger than the Tsar Bomba.
The doomsday bomb mentioned in movies like Dr. Strangelove and On the Beach is (afaik) a ~50 giga ton Cobolt bomb, which should make the earth uninhabitable for around 100 years.

Big bombs is not very effective though relative to alot of small bombs because the energy (heat, pressure, radiation) diminish very fast. A bomb placed on the ground will also release most of its energy upwards. A small limited nuclear war (~100 megatons exchanged) could be more devastating than one big "doomsday device".

probably there are many experimental weapons that would fill one or multiple categories in that poll on paper, if they are already available to be used in a real scenario it's highly doubtful.
