But other than that, just look at this site, we can shit on and lie all the way to sunday about government and government officials all day, and the site is still running. So it is far from the 1984 scenario some people are delusioned is crushing down on them every second

    Will it? Probably not.

What would it be like? Vastly preferable.

The internet should be treated as any other utility.

The German government is incapable of taking over what is still considered "unknown territory" by them. They would have to send explorers first.

Well let them try and fail. One government alone can't do anything, and there are so many nations with governments out there (yes that might be new for US citizens) that you can bet that not everybody will be in the same boat, if just to make a point. As soon as an opposing force exists it will start avoiding or undermining the controlled zone, and business will be as usual. Just a little more exclusive maybe.

Your rights as a consumer begin and end at the point where you choose not to consume, and not where you yourself influence the consumed goods.

Did they recently have a sale on tin-foil hats?

The "omg mah privacy" people need to grow up. The government doesn't care that your friend completed Flappy Birds for you, nor do they care that you like midget porn. If you have something criminal to hide however... then fuck your privacy you going to jail.

Yes please. Everyone give up your privacy. It is for the greater good of the cowards.

Government make a habit out of trying to use data collected "exclusively for x" for "y in the name of the greater good" or "z but just this once, its a exception".

In a few decades time there will be such a abundance of data stored on just about everything, that the temptation to use this data for whatever purpose will become very tempting. The problem is they only need to succeed once to fuck everything up. It's just hard to foresee where development leads too.

A good example in todays world is: insurance companies woud love to know what you buy at the grocery store. This data is available, or could easily be made available, but currently isn't allowed to be used for such purposes. But i am sure you can imagine what would happen if insurance companies got hold of this data. I once read a story about people involved in that industry paying their groceries with cash intead of cards because of this.

Or the nightmare scenario where the fact that you got fowarded a email 20 years ago from someone who did x y or z, and therefore you are now "accused by association".

Or as this thread is about, government deciding what is good for you on the internet.

Somewhere down the line, something like that is bound to happen, probably after the next 9/11, just see what draconian measures were taken last time. Or from lobbyist at some point.

The thing to remember here is that its not you that decides what is good in this context, and things can change.

It already surpasses the post office in functionality. That's why the post office's revenue is down when it comes to selling postage for letters and postcards. Email's just better.

The U.S. government already controls the Internet, through ICANN and the FCC, which is the only thing keeping the EurAsian censors, who want to take away your porn and throw you in jail for trolling, at bay. You're welcome, by the way. Oddly they keep trying to relinquish this control, and it gets voted down every time because it would be a Very Bad Idea For Everyone™.
OMG 13:37 - Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Cleave unto me, and I shall grant to thee the blessing of eternal salvation."

And His disciples said unto Him, "Can we get Kings instead?"

Functionality =/= functional. The USPS is considerably better administered and for much cheaper on the consumer end than internet service provision.

I dont think much will change, but some things whould suck.
they might do is putting age restrictions on things and a method of preventing minors from viewing certain content.
They probobly whould take down/block traffic to torrent sites wich whould suck.

this is ofc if they whould just prohibit things that are illegal, but if they are gonna censor shit they dont like ppl seeing then it wohuld suck alot.. like in some countries in the middleeast youtube isnt accessable...
