Why we should stop calling the Mentally Challenged or Handicapped "retarded"

The common word everyone uses for someone with a mental disability is retarded. Everyone is at fault here for doing this at least once in their lifetime, but the people that refer to the mentally challenged constantly as retarded are terrible people. My standpoint on this comes from the fact that I have seen some people that are mentally challenged beat normal students in school academics. This is mainly in cases of something like down syndrome, not a very severe mental illness. It isn't right to call these poor people retarded. In fact, the normal humans beings that are complete idiots should be classified as retarded. Basically, someone that doesn't know the capital of their own state, asking how to ask a question on a website and in doing so asking a question on the website, (the next two are my favorites) asking how people got around before they invented google maps, and finally why there were hashtags (POUND SYMBOLS) on old cellphones before twitter was invented. Yea, and the mentally challenged deserve to be classified as retarded compared to people who do this? Guess so.

It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shakes, the shakes become a warning.

I use retarded to describe things in a more literal sense. That it's stupid to the point of being ass backwards and regressive, holding things back. I would never call someone with a mental disability retarded. Normal people doing dumb shit are retarded.

Retarded used to be a good word until people started using it for an insult. Mentally handicapped okay?

Someday soon, "mentally challenged" will be changed to something else because it will be seen as an insult.

The term "retarded" actually was a change from a former word, I believe "moron" or something like that.

But yeah, evolving our language use to stay ahead of the curve isn't a bad thing.

Retard by definition is to slow or delay something. Examples would be fire retardant slows or delays the advance of fire.

The problem isnt with the word being used for the mentally disabled. The problem is using the word when talking about stupidity.

You do know that if we change the word, people will start using the new word as an insult too, right?

It had potential, but the "reasoning" presented by the OP was rather disappointing.

I use the term "retarded" occasionally (like referring to that school calling its kids "purple penguins" or whatever) but never in reference to anyone with actual disabilities.

We're well past that. We took the word back and detached it from mental illnesses. As such, this thread is literally retarded, for trying to impress backwards logic onto this non-issue.

I wonder how long it'll take till the culture retardation squad -the pc crowd- spawns.

"retarded" hasn't been politically correct for a long time now. And like previous posters have said, people will just begin to use the new word as derogatory. No point in changing.

Whatever new word you come up with will become the new insult. Get over it. Stop getting offended by small things.

The only problem with that is the need for more and more complex words to basically describe the same thing.

seems to be an american thing to be sensitive to retard.
    1) Load the amount of weight I would deadlift onto the bench
    2) Unrack
    3) Crank out 15 reps
    4) Be ashamed of constantly skipping leg day

    "adjective
    1.
characterized by a slowness or limitation in intellectual understanding and awareness, emotional development, academic progress, etc."

This is why it's most commonly used, because it fits.

The word Idiot is an outdated word in psychiatry and refers to someone with an IQ of less than 20 and we band that word around all the time.

Retarded has more power to it because it's still used medically and so is more offensive.
