Rememberance day and the "Great" war.

I think the term the great war needs a rethink, there was absolutely nothing great about it and as for our royal family being the figureheads of remembrance when it was there internal arguments between princes and prinicipalities, assasinations and the later loss of life on a cataclysmic scale that only affected the man on the street makes me quite mad to be honest. ps I served in the military, but it really does need the truth outing on this one.

    discuss, keep it civil.

Why not? You should read a dictionary and see what it says, Words quite commonly have more than one meaning.
Plus it wasn't our current royals that caused the war, Saying they can't be figureheads is pretty silly.

damn thx man never knew great had more than one meaning. Hell, lets just write off all those millions of dead. Nothing wrong there

It was the Great War. It was the War to End All Wars. These were names given to it at the time. World War I only exists as a later term. The world at the time saw it as the Great War to be done with all war. Not really up to people now to change that.

I think this should be in the off topic forum. Unless there was a great war in WoW :O I don't think the first and second war count

    Moved the thread.

Fits better in the Off-topic section as it should.
FOMO: "Fear Of Missing Out", also commonly known as people with a mental issue of managing time and activities, many expecting others to fit into their schedule so they don't miss out on things to come. If FOMO becomes a problem for you, do seek help, it can be a very unhealthy lifestyle..

You say "keep it civil" but just because we point out the use of great here is indeed correct, as your post clearly implied you believed there to be only one meaning behind the word, You act like a child..really? No one said anything about "writing off the dead" Or that nothing is wrong, but it was a great war, As I said already, great doesn't only mean what you implied it to mean, it also means of large scale, which this war was.

While words do have different meanings, I'm pretty sure one of the meanings of rememberance isn't, "write off."

I do if it fits the context... like with this.

Well I don't see why anyone would ever read it as "good" great, Context is key, as with anything

Seems to me like you're ignoring the fact that it's been mentioned, a few times, that "Great" has a double meaning and in this case "Great" is referring to the sheer scale of World War 1. Has nothing to do with what you think "Great" means, it is the context of the sentence you're using.

I wield the superpower of Historical Context, and it becomes pretty darned clear which is meant.

If you don't know enough about the era to understand why it was called the Great War, then that's a reflection on you, not the term.

If you actually had some respect for those that fought you would at least wait a day before starting this shit.

I don't think any one with at least average inteligince thinks the Great Barrier Reef, Great Wall of China, or Great white sharks got their name because they are groovy and totally neato.
Get a grip man! It's CHEESE!

Only a fool would think the intended usage of great in "The Great War" as good instead of it's actual meaning of being very large.

Thankfully The Simpsons have this covered.

Great meaning large or immense, we use it in the pejorative sense!
