If he gives all current immigrants until-further-notice work permits, Congress will be required to pass an act that strikes his work permits down AND creates a path to citizenship.
Well, technically he isn't giving them work permits. He's just deferring deportation on a group, and existing laws give work permits to anyone in a deferred status.

Normally, I wouldn't be so pedantic, but there's a lot of noise on the right about legalities. Given that, it's important to differentiate between the actual executive actions, and the things that follow those actions based on standing laws and regulations.

And, one wonders if that isn't precisely how Obama wanted it.
Perhaps he didn't bother making an issue of it with the networks. He has previously complained a lot when networks declined to give him free time.
By the way -- this announcement will be made on the night of the Latin Grammies. The show will be delayed 15 minutes for Obama's announcement.

This forces one of a few courses of action:

Obama grants undocumented immigrants work permits, which gives them immunity from deportation for the time being.

    1) Our useless congress acts and passes a bill which nullifies Obama's EA, pissing off all the Latinos (even the legal immigrants) and screwing themselves even further.
    2) Our useless congress acts and passes a bill which grants an overly burdensome path to amnesty which pisses off all the Latinos.
    3) Our useless congress acts and passes a bill which grants a reasonable path to amnesty which gains the GOP favor amongst the Latinos and brings several that are on the fence over to the GOP.
    4) Our useless congress continues being useless and pundits whine and complain about Obama for 2 years. Republican president gets elected in and passes EA repealing Obama's work permit act, having the same results as 1 and 2.

Can they still work in agriculture and get paid shit wages? Because as long as businesses that provide jobs to illegals are unharmed, I'm cool with it. Target the millions that come across the border and ignore the hundreds of employers that hire them in large quantities... if mexico request amnesty and the breaking of borders then it has come to the point were the current body goverment of that country has proven they can not fix the issue. in that case the assisting party would step up and take over. so then the United states could in case take mexico and its people as part of the U.S. stating that the current rule of the country is not able to keep control. this will give more land and resources to the U.S and solve the border issue.

that is the reason why you hold no political power, because you are too narrow minded. there is many things that would push the U.S. to take the land. mexico is not a poor country and many things they have, U.S. has to import into the country costing them money.

I think our political power is equal, just one of us thinks taking over Mexico is a viable solution.......

Wait. . . . you want to invade Mexico, Rhineland style? Make the people of Earth hate Americans even more?

    Yeah, fuck that noise.

I dislike Obama's policy decision as much as the next guy. But even I have to call BS on this.

There are two reasons why networks aren't covering this.

    1. It's not really news. He's been talking about doing this for months.
    2. Networks are in the business of retaining viewers. And most viewers are probably tired of watching Obama talk.

Besides...I'm pretty sure the cable news channels (CNN, MSNBC, and Fox) are televising it.

pretty much, if mexico is pushing for amnesty for broken borders than the U.S. need to put something on the table as a counter. lets see how determine their goverment is on this amnesty. enough to hand over power?

Added: taking control to fix something that has not been able to be fixed by the current goverment would not bee seen as something bad by other countries. besides, we have done worse on other countries and no one said a thing about it.

I didn't know those things were governed by immigration law.

And Obama isn't setting precedent here. He's following it.

Obama is citing Bush and Reagan, and the next guy is going to cite all three. That he is continuing, and expanding on, executive overreach is not really a positive imo. Also how can you claim prosecutorial discretion gives the President the right to selectively enforce the law in immigration, yet not in other areas?

Its not executive overreach. Its exercising a pretty basic presidential authority. Immigration law, which admittedly is a Kafkaesque nightmare of human bureaucracy, allows the executive a broad degree of discretion in how to enforce the law. Its why deportation numbers change so much from year to year even when the law doesn't actually change.

And frankly Conservatives should be happy about this. Here we have a politician saying he's going to prioritize government spending in a way that focuses limited government funds on serious criminals and border security over going after productive and law abiding families.
