Running a hospital is probably better than running a casino. You can only take all the money a person has in a casino. And the person is fully aware of how much they've lost. Hospitals don't have such silly restrictions.
This is why if you're travelling with any possibility for medical problems (such as being preggo), you pay for travel insurance.

Oh for sure it is, private insurers are no better in Canada than anywhere else really in that regard. It's still just a business.
This is still also an issue with extraordinary costs of care abroad. Provincial health plans will pay for your expenses, but only up to an amount equal to what those same services would cost at home. Which are typically a fraction of what is charged by a US hospital...
People actually have to pay to give birth? This is a thing?
