You said that the game is about improving your character, why not do that then, instead of improving your garrison? You don't need to mine or herb in order to be competetive in either PvP or PvE. It isn't the best way to make gold either, so why bother if you don't like it? If you're going for crafted gear, then a Blacksmith/Tailoring building etc might be good, and necassary if you wish to progress asap. But I wouldn't call it a chore to max out the work orders and collect every 2nd day or so.
Wouldn't dungeons be more of a chore in this case, since you need to put alot more time into it? Dungeons also offer better rewards than Garrisons, making it more necessary.
Also, it seems like you don't like any kind of farming, or does PvP. Since you don't like cosmetics from the reputations I'll asume you don't like collecting transmog gear through old raids or such either. Sounds like this is a problem with you, not the game.
OP is just another guy who cant be happy unless he does ALL THE THINGS! ALL THE TIME!
This is the same type of guy who complains about Multiple Avengers comics because he doesn't have the time...the resources...or maybe just the inclination to read the other titles and therefor resents their very existence because its content he personally specifically does not enjoy.

I hate garrisons.
I had taking 5 minutes to mine and herb everyday.
Glad sanctum gives me way too many blues that i don't need, i wish there was a way to get upgraded pvp gear from it.
I really hate what it has done to major cities.
They took the so much away from the last bits of community we were holding on to.
etc..
etc..
I don't mind dealing with it too much on one character but i have been avoiding levelling my alt because i don't want to deal with this garrison thing again..
I personally hope they don't make it to the next x-pac.
I really hope professions go back to the way they used to be.

Upon the announcement at Blizzcon 2013 about Garrisons being a major feature in WOD, I absolutely loathed the whole idea of player housing. When I tried the feature out in the beta, I applauded the whole concept and idea. Maybe if I didn't PVP 90% of the time, I'd feel a little bit different about Garrisons, I'll admit that. Otherwise, I strongly believe Garrisons are a fine addition to the game. Sure they're nothing but a clever disguise of dailies, but I really like the addition and prefer the disguise.
Ashran on the other hand is a major clusterfuck and absolute failure.

Here we go with the typical ´ I want to be hardcore and be as advanced as possible.... but I only want to do the bare minimum of things, the few things I actually enjoy doing´. I should be able to have max power and be as hardcore as everyone else without doing anything.
I spent 4 hours yesterday geting stables quest done. Then went around killing trees for lumbermill quest. Started chapter 2 for highmaul with khadgar. Theres plenty o do just how much do you want to do.
I just wish that if you assigned a follower to the mine/herb garden, they would mine/harvest everything and put it in a box for you to collect.
The thing is you don't have enough of the mats to make your professions worthwhile because things like tailoring, and jewel crafting for example have daily resets for their main materials, and without the garrisons they are essentially useless.
Take taladite crystal and hexweave cloth for example.
You can craft abut 4-7 with a daily reset and epic quality gems or tailor patterns cost 50 -100 pieces.
I haven't mined or herbed in days. People like you think that just because something is there they have to do it. You don't. Do what's fun. I haven't done Apexis dailies in a week either because I don't enjoy it. I like to raid and I'm doing just fine without having to do everything in my garrison once a day.

I hate that the only place i have to get my nemesis quests completed for gladiators sanctum is Ashran if I actually want to get my kills.
Ashran is such a mess, its not even pvp its lag and spell spam.
I wish those nemesis quests were not tied to draenor, or you could at least get all 7 of them at once.
I feel obligated to run ashran a few hours a day just to get titles.

"People like you" play the game for different reasons than "people like me"
Here's how you have to look at Garrisons: A Garrison is a feature. Kinda how some cars have features like blind-spot notifications on the side mirrors; it's not something you have to use, but they're there if you need them. Garrisons provide a lot of convenient ways for players, especially with alts they can't have dedicated time for, to progress through the game. Sure it may be slower, but it's doable.
Having some people say they don't like the mines because it takes time... Have you gone out and farmed in the actual world? It's really no different... there are nodes, you mine them, and they are YOUR nodes that no one else has access to. Then someone said something about having all those goblins do the work for you? Work Orders... they actually do work for you...
Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

I like the garrison as well. On my Monk (my Main), I hit all his Work Orders in the morning before I go to work. I clear out the Mine and the garden and turn in my Fishing Quest. I set all my Missions for the longer ones (assuming I have the Followers to do them). Then I'll pop over to my Warrior, hit his Blacksmithing and Engineering daily crafting stuff and only clear his Mine and/or Garden if I need the mats. Then I pop over to my Hunter and do my Inscription daily crafts.
When I get home I open all my X-Mas presents (Missions and usually quite a few Salvage Crates), do my Apexis daily and try and get in on a raid. If I can't get in on a raid I'll hop on my Warrior and work on leveling him. I'll check back on my Monk's Garrison after every few dungeons to keep the shorter missions rolling (more Salvage Crates).
I have factions to work on as well. Once LFR releases I'll be hitting that up to gather up some missing gear pieces.
Did the Goren Invasion last night and got Gold by quite a bit of excess points. Then I helped a friend do the Shadowmoon Invasion but only got Silver (missed it by like 14 points).
Lot's to do. If you consider the game a "chore", maybe MMO's aren't for you.
What reasons do you play for then? Is it some reason other than having fun? I don't see the point of logging into a video game to do something that's not fun, especially when it's not mandatory and you can survive without it.

Exactly, I don't know why anyone would bother playing this game if they didn't find it fun? Also, it's probably less grindy than any other point in the game's history, and I've been playing since 2005. It took me like a week to make my crafted 640 robe. That's not bad.
