I think there is a fundamental issue with the combat in this game for sustained dmg classes vs. burst dmg ones. Every time the BAM runs away they seem to heal like 10% automatically and/or just do a lot of regen in general. I dumped an Anjanath in a trap like 4-5x and knocked him down a few times beyond that and still barely beat him within 45mins as Dual Blades. My roommate used hammer and did it in like 15-20mins and said he only ran twice. He ran for me like a dozen times.

Does having elemental weapons that are its weakness make them more likely to flee? Because my pet and I were both using water weapons.

Think of them running off as phases. The weaker they get they will run off and you have to chase them, Don't be surprised if a fight takes you 15-20min's. They will reach a point "last phase" where they run off to sleep and try to heal up.

So having the elemental they are weak to will do more damage and in turn make reaching those points faster.

(At lease that's what I have noticed, Someone can correct me if I am wrong)

This is my first Monster Hunter game, and I have to say, I can't fucking stand the bigger, slower weapons. To me personally, they seem useless. You move so slow, can't react in time to a lot of the different monsters' movements/attacks, and they just in general seem to kill shit so much slower in my experience. I've had WAY better results with the sword and shield weapon set. Which to me just seems ass backwards. In almost any other game, a sword and shield combo will kill shit a lot slower than a two handed weapon.....but in MHW, I've killed things with a sword and shield in half the time it takes me to kill the same monster with a longsword, hammer, switch axe, etc, etc.

Maybe I'm just doing it all wrong, but the two handed weapons seem to do slower overall damage and leave you far too vulnerable most of the time.

And how in the nine hells do you capture a monster instead of killing it? The game does an absolutely TERRIBLE job of explaining this to you and I haven't managed to figure it out myself yet. It's also annoying that capturing seems to grant you more/better rewards when in theory, killing the monster and carving off parts from it would actually net you more than keeping it alive (common sense if you ask me). Once again, just an ass backwards design philosophy to me.

Wound it until its limping (or u see a skull on the mini map at its icon) then shock trap it. After it hits the shock trap throw tranq bomb at its head. You can have the Elder Mender make u the items if need be.

As for the weapon's heavy hits harder but show moment unlike the light weapon's that hit weaker but fast moment. Damage on all the weapon's seem about the same but it also depends what you fight.

I personally fell in love with the Long Sword.

    1. Unless that's explained at a point in the story I haven't made it to yet, then the game doesn't do the first damn thing to explain that to you. Highly annoying to say the least. Thanks for the info.

    2. The large weapons just feel extremely unwieldy to me and more often than not, leave me completely exposed. I end up taking way more damage when using one. It's probably just my inexperience with the MH series, but the large weapons do not feel intuitive AT ALL. And most monsters seem far too fast to make such slow ass weapons viable for me. I can't count the number of times I get caught in a constant knocked down/knocked up state because I couldn't dodge or move out of the way fast enough while trying to swing one of the big ass weapons.

    1) Yep I had to look up how to do it myself, I do not recall the game explaining it at all.

    2) Ya the large weapon's are more hit at the perfect moment's type of weapon's IMO. The only heavy weapon I liked was the Great Sword but that got old quickly. If u want to move around and do good damage while looking cool I recommend the long sword. Its special attack IMO is awesome.

I did try the longsword, and while it's probably one of the more tolerable "big" weapons for me, I still find it too slow and unwieldy to use. I find myself constantly missing with its slow attacks because the monster took one small step to the side. I also constantly find myself still being left wide open to an attack because my character can't ever seem to recover from a weapon swing in time to do anything about it.

This is honestly one of my biggest gripes about the game so far. There aren't really any good "middle ground" weapons. You either have fast and small weapons that don't hit as hard or you have big and slow weapons that hit harder but are EXTREMELY unwieldy in comparison. There's no medium sized, medium speed weapons with damage in the middle to bridge the gap between them. I know some people have told me that longsword and insect glaive are middle ground weapons, but to me they just don't feel like it.

There is a sidequest explaining how to capture, that's like the first capture quest you get.

Monsters only heal when they go to sleep and the amount of healing they do is extremely negligible.

When you enter your first capture investigations it tells you exactly how to capture a monster and even shows a video. You also get a free trap and tranq bomb in the chest at the start of your investigation.

(It could be the tutorial showed up when you first engage the monster but I definitely saw it this morning)

That's freakin EPIC! hahaha! They're playing leapfrog!

But on an unrelated note, as a person who GREATLY enjoys the Dark Souls games, would people say that Monster Hunter is going to be appealing to me? I've seen a little bit of footage, but haven't delved into the nuance. It LOOKS like the combat is kind of similar, but I'd be interested to know what people think.

If you like challenging fights yes, If you like Fashion Souls than likely not. Gear matters in MH unlike Dark Souls so you can have a little Fashion but you will have to adjust your gear based on what you are doing. So there isn't as much freedom in doing that in MH as it is in Souls.

For me its the best action RPG I have played in years and I loved the souls series (and more so Bloodborne).

What is it you like about Dark Souls? and what do you want out of Monster Hunter.

It's less about fashion souls for me, and more about the actual gameplay. The ability for me to master the PVE gameplay mechanics and get rewarded according to my personal skill. I also like how there's equal parts stats and upgrading gear, though. I can challenge the game with my skill, but if it turns out to be a little too frustrating after 10+ tries, I can always go farm up my stats a bit and come back when I'm stronger.

From what I've seen of Monster Hunter, it looks like this should be what I'm after. Skill-based combat with some RPG elements. Lots of mechanics and execution-based gameplay. I'm REALLY hoping there's completely viable solo play, and I'm not forced into a group with other players. That's something I didn't think to check: Is MH an MMO? Or is it a single player RPG? Or maybe multiplayer, but not MMO?

    You can do everything solo.

Edit : I hope the first big DLC (not the one like Jho) will add a zone with snow. A bit sad that there isn't one.

Dark Souls is my favorite game of all time. Monster Hunter is my most played non-MMO series of all time. They hit similar beats in terms of the feelings they evoke. Also the 14 weapons, even the simplest one, have far deeper movesets and techniques you have to learn. It's extremely satisfying. Monster Hunter is definitely grindy though especially in comparison to Dark Souls. You can do everything naked but you'll get fucked up by strong monsters if you do, so grinding for armor is pretty much necessary and grinding for weapons is absolutely necessary as you'd likely time out if you didn't. Honestly it's amazingly addictive and I think if you like Dark Souls, you'll like this.

To be honest this isn't really true. I've been soloing Monster Hunter games (including G-Rank which is a significant leap above the High Rank in World) and I always play Fashion Hunter and use full sets. Sure if you want to 100% min-max you can use mixed sets but it isn't necessary in the slightest.

Another thing to note is that you cannot become overpowered in Monster Hunter. At least not when you're progressing. You can't access monsters stronger than the monster you're currently on in the story so you can't craft more powerful gear compared to the monster you're fighting. So gear really just puts you on par with the monsters it doesn't make you stronger than them. Until you get to endgame, then you can go back to lower rank monsters and shred through them.

So now that I can make my Zorah set, what does the Blast effect actually do? Would it be better on faster or slower weapons? I'm using the greatsword and long sword.

Blast builds up as you hit the monster when enough has built up it explodes doing decent damage to the monster.
