    High school money

    Hey
so a few days ago i saw this post https://www.facebook.com/VirginRadio...029710/?type=1 on facebook, and i'm extremly suprised with the responses.. It's like they think it's some unbelievable paradise dream.. But since i live in sweden i find it obvious that you get money every month for going to school, getting free lunch, free school, free books, (Even nowdays i think free computer/ipad)

So i'm just wondering, do other countries not have this? Since it's seem so obvious to me that it should be there for everyone

I get around 480 euros a month just for attending college. Then again I live in a 1 parent home and my mother makes around 19K a year.

Is it tied to performance. do you get money if you do well and nothing if you dont?

    Where do I start...

In Estonia public school are free of monthly/yearly fees to attend, but you won't get paid to go to school, all the needed items from computer to clothes your parents or you will have to pay for your own money. No one really seems to care that your parents earn the possible minimum wage of 500 euro per month (incl taxes), you still have to send your kids to school

If you attend a private school your parents will pay attending fee + the money needed for school books and stuff.

If you got University here you have to be almost grade A student to be able to get onto a "free government" paid slot. If your sub-bar and still want to attend Uni you will have to pay for it. If you want sponsorship for going to school you cannot work and your parents income has to be smaller then a fixed number. If you want "travel support" you have to live faaaaar outside the given university down.

And ofc if you are an excellent student people might offer you a scholarship.

But in all fairness, even when we have to pay to go to school, our kids are well educated and successful in the wide world due to the base eduction we receive.

Its not. Its not a loan, purely in welfare form.

The only point it will be withdrawn is if you simply do not show up for class but if you do and get mostly D's or even a F here and there, its still there.

Schools in the UK are free with poorer kids getting free lunches. Books and everything are lent to you free of charge every year but you have to buy your own (subsidised) uniforms, pens, pencils, etc.

You get money if you go to your classes, and no money if you skip many classes

So if they show up and practice rapping all day (common where I went to school) they still get paid.

Mostly the same here, except it's very easy to get into a free university - only requirement is having passed the mature exam. But then again, students with poor grades won't be accepted into prestigious unis. There are some subsidies for poor and/or exceptional students, but none for the average bunch.

Can't really imagine being paid for attending school, lol.

When I went to high school, they got signed up as not being there even if they were if they did nothing and just wasted time, not sure if that's entirely legal to do or not on the school part but its completely detached from actual grading.

Getting good grades dosen't matter for the payment, but you have to attend the classes and not just sit there and do nothing or disturb others study time while begin in the classroom

School here is free, you don't get paid for going.

It's free to attend a public school, you will need to provide your own uniform though, which is very cheap.
I'm not sure how it works now, but when I was in school, kids from low income homes had free school dinners as well, so the school would provide a free lunch, and I some cases a free breakfast.

I'm suprised aswell by the people on that facebook post, why would they think he was trolling and post pic s like "100% bullshit" or "If it's on the internet then it must be true"

Is this such a unbelievable thing for some other countries?

It did not seem that most teachers took attendance when I was in school, but Im old now and my memory is going
I know on my reports cards some classes would have 0-1 absences at the end of the year when I had been out 5-6 times

Although I don't find it bad or something outrageous that kids get paid to attend school. It is a great bonus and is making the life easier for poorer families (although not really at home how well Sweden is doing in that regard).

But if you'd see the larger picture it's not all pink and flowery , as read from the comments on FB by some locals about the ridiculous amount of taxes what people pay to keep up the support....

My grades would've been a lot better if I was payed to go to school :/

Highschool is basicly free here, you have to pay for books and trips etc but you can get it back if you are below a certain income treshold I think.

Yes. I have never heard of anything remotely similiar to this in any other country in the world outside of scholarships for best students.
But then again this is what a given country actually does interesting things with tax money.

Yes. In the US, we do not get paid to go to highschool. My highschool was horrid too. Most people do not get a free lunch. You have to pretty much be on some form of government assistance to get it. The free lunch they do offer is beyond tiny and not nearly enough for someone that old.

Highschool is free, but things vary. Some have uniforms while others don't. Books are provided. A lot of schools are actually underfunded. I had some really old books and my school was several hundred over capacity. They choose to spend all of their funding on building new schools instead of investing in better books.

In short, yes, for some it is really hard to believe that anyone gets paid to go to highschool. If we got paid to go in the US, I can guarantee that the dropout rate would not be nearly as high.

Why do you consider it weird?

When I went to middle/highschool 15-18 years ago we had to pay for our school lunch , when I almost was finishing high school up to middle-school was funded by the government, while the highschool students bought their own "warm lunch" (from schools cafeteria) and the recent trend is that all food is free to all classes from 1 to 12 in schools.
